I like my putter, and am not a big fan of inserts. It seems that I can get a better feel with my milled putter.

In my opinion, inserts just feel too soft. I have a straight milled face and I think I get more consistent contact and feel with it. Don't get me wrong, the milled face is still soft, just not too soft....if that makes sense.

I played the last 4 years with an insert and switched a little over a month ago to my Scotty and prefer the feel of no insert. I find my distance control and feel is better without the insert.

You would have to putt with some of each to decide. Very subjective thing. Personally, I don't like inserts. Have a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 with teryllium insert and just never really got the feel for it. Bought an Odyssey 2 ball and the insert was too soft for my taste. Recently got a Rife Antigua. Best putter I have ever used. It is 100% milled. It has grooves on the face that get the ball rolling faster. 40% of the Champions Tours players use a Rife putter. I would suggest you roll a few with a Rife before pulling the trigger on a new putter. Below is a link to the Rife site. Take a look at the Antigua and Aussie. You can see some of the Rife putters on The Golf Warehouse, Edwin Watts, etc... websites. Under the name Guerin Rife.

I also don't like inserts.

Personally, I find them difficult to use on long putts, or on slow greens. If i played really fast greens i would probably use an insert putter.

Currently I'm really craving a mallet putter without an insert.

It just depends what you like as always... I think that all the different inserts vary a lot in feel also. Before I had a Ping G5i with and insert and needed a change this winter. The reason I didn't like that putter is that it almost seemed like it had a hot spot on the insert and would launch the ball sometimes. Have been hitting putters for a long time in the few shops around town and I loved quite a few of them. I went with a TM Rossa Fontana because the feel was great and it seemed to have the truest roll for me, and price was also a concern. I almost bought a Cleveland mill-faced putter, but it was just a little light for me. Hands down the best feel I have found in a putter is an old golfsmith mill-faced mallot that my dad uses. No wonder he has had the same one since the late 90's. That putter almost feels like it putts for you.
I would say that I am naturally a mill-faced guy, but for now I am playing an insert...

Inserts can make a harder, distance ball feel softer on the green.

I personally prefer a softer ball and no insert.

    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
