I'm having trouble squaring the club face on my driver. Even at 1/2 swings, my driver doesn't seem to close fast enough. Of course, on full swings my driver face is even further open.

I don't have this problem on my long irons and hybrids... just the driver!

Any training aids that can help resolve this nagging problem? The Momentus iron helped me with the irons. I wasn't sure about the driver though. Or any effective drills perhaps?

Thanks!

Try a baseball swing. Swing at a ball as if it was at waist level. Feel the clubhead releasing. Slowly move the clubhead closer to the ground (i.e. swing more and more like at a golf ball than at a baseball), keeping that same feeling.

You gotta hear the 'whoosh' at the bottom. I was having the same trouble- everything pushed/sliced right. I read a tip in one of the mags about hearing the 'whoosh' at the bottom of the arc. So I practiced just taking full swings. No Ball- just a tee in the ground to keep focused. Get it to 'whoosh' just as the clubhead passes the tee. It also mentioned swinging the club 'upside-down' to get the feel of the 'whoosh'. Take a normal grip at the hosel and practice a full swing. The narrower grip end will 'whoosh' better so you get an audio feedback when it's done correctly. Oh, and a lighter grip pressure helps the hands to release as well.

I had a similar problem with my driver too. Tried reading about how to fix it, videos, used a few swing aids, like the Ledbetter Swing Setter, and finally went to see a Teaching Pro...

the Pro did the trick using video analysis . There were several problems with my swing from set up to take-away, posture to release, follow through and finish born from years of self-instruction. In my case, I was crunched over the ball, all tucked in and restricted. I rolled my hands back almost right from the start of the takeaway. This opened the club face immediately, and though I tried to compensate with shoulder turn, the face remained open at impact and off she went to the right. Set up is also key. Your head needs to be behind the ball and remain that way throughout the swing to a full follow through. But in all honesty...I don't think any of the well meaning fixes suggested will do help. Seek a PGA Teaching Pro and just do one lesson to correct your swing...if he/she uses video analysis all the better. In my case, it was worth the $20. Cheers!

Your shafts might be too stiff as well, might want to demo some other shafts and see if it helps any.

I had this problem myself... the stock shaft in my driver was too stiff and didn't have much torque. I visited a PGA Pro and had him put me on the launch monitor... he found me a good shaft that fit my swing and I haven't had any problems since. I highly recommend that approach.

    • It's not meaningful, because driving = playing golf. When practicing "turns," that isn't what block practice is, and that's just one aspect of practicing driving. Block practice of turns would be practicing the same turn repeatedly in the same way. We'll talk sometime, Vishal, because I'm not sure I'm reading you right or vice versa. Block vs. Random practice "studies" are cited all the time, but it turns out that block practice isn't what many actually think it is, per Dr. Raymond Prior himself. I think it's a much narrower thing than what many people think it is.
    • In my original post, the 'same thing' in relation to block practice of = 'how to handle the steering' not 'exact same turn 100 times'. There's a meaningful difference. Hope that clears the confusion. In any case I made a larger point in favor of block practice, ya know, repetition of a specific piece if done mindfully as a good thing, which I think is very much on topic. Matt's post ask a good question about learning a new motor pattern. Like how would you randomize 'make sure the club head goes outside the hands in the bs'? I would think it is literally the same move a 100 times = block practice right?
    • Day 437 - 2025-12-11 Got some backswing work done on GEARS today after testing out a few things. Backswing looking pretty good, generally speaking. I can… Hinge a little earlier. Stay right a little longer. Keep a little trail knee flex. I'll continue with that the rest of December, then re-assess. It may go to the middle of January or so, before I can do the downswing stuff again.
    • That post confused me. It's kinda been the whole topic here. Literally doing the same exact thing over and over again = block practice.
    • Day 31 (11 Dec 25) - Regripped my #1 putter and spent some time rolling the rock.  Worked on lagging the ball to set distances (ladder drill) and overall tempo.
