Are there any sets that stand out above the rest for an entry level golfer? I played for my first time yesterday(the first time i have ever really even swung a golf club) and shot 139 but back 9 i started being only 2 or 3 over per hole. Really enjoyed it and would love to continue playing, I am 17 and am currently using my dads realllllllllyyyyy old clubs which he got like 20 years ago.

---I found these on craigslist http://greenville.craigslist.org/spo/1162115004.html is this a good deal? Thanks!

What is your budget?

Those clubs you listed are about what I would expect for $45. They are at least 10 years old. Consider taking lessons. Group lessons are a great way to learn on a budget. My local lesson has 1 hour group clinics for $20 a piece. a full swing 1 hour clinic will ensure you get the right fundamentals. Also purchase this book http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...efix=Ben+Hogan As for clubs, it entirely depends on your budget. I would think you could do pretty well with about $400 by surfing here, ebay and other websites. Once again, it really depends on your budget. $75 used driver $150 used irons $50 putter $50 golf bag $75 left for a glove, shoes, tee's and balls.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

A couple of comments:

- First - Tell us what brand and model clubs your Dad gave you. Being 17, twenty years sounds like REEEEALLLLY old, but they may be perfectly suitable for you to start with. Maybe just some new grips. - As a courtesy to other golfers, it is probably not a good idea to go onto a golf course the very first time you have ever swung a club. Spend a little time on the driving range until you are able to hit the ball solidly EVERY time you swing at it (may not go far or straight, but you should be able to make solid contact each time). - The Craigs list set doesn't look like it would offer any upgrade over your Dad's hand me downs.

Tad Moore TM-02 irons on Ebay. Great set for a beginner to mid handicapper. Also, a used set of Maxfli Revolutions. Both available on Ebay

I would go for a set of Tommy Armour 845s if you can find them used <$100. Adams also makes good game improvement irons. My first set was the Adams GT2 Undercut and I still have it as my backup.

This might be much more than you have in your budget but http://shop.pgatour.com/golfequipment.aspx has a set of cleveland hibore irons for 50% off. That's still $400 though. That said, they are the perfect iron set for a beginner imo.

-Thanks for all the input guys...as for the guy asking what kind of clubs my dad has they are "Northwestern" the driver is made of like pure wood lol, and the lamanent is falling apart, and he is missing a few irons. The putter looks like a putt-putt putter lol, but metal instead of plastic.
-TO TJY: Yea, i picked up on a few holes when i was struggling because i didn't wanna hold up the twosome behind us and we let them pass us on the back nine, leaving nobody behind us. But I could hit it everytime, just kinda a slice here a slice there lol.

Go to Walmart and get a set of Dunlops. Woods, irons, putter, and bag for about $170. Get a bunch of cheap balls. Pinnacle makes a good cheap ball. Maxfli "Noodle" also great ball. If you don't do anything else, take one half hour lesson with a local PGA pro and have him teach you the proper grip, stance, and ball position for the different clubs. Nothing will slow your progress down faster than a poor grip. Trust me on this, I know from experience. Get out and have fun man. Upgrade it all later if you really get into the game. For now, you would have a new set of clubs, a basic understanding of the proper fundamentals, and a new game to learn. A wonderful game might I add.

Danattherock I think I am going to go with your idea. It seems more in my price range right now. I saw the Top-Flite XL set, for 200$, it only comes w/ a 6-pw, driver, fairway wood, two hybrid 4,5, and a putter, should i go w/ that or try and get a full iron set w/ it?

any set that includes a bag and a full set of clubs will all be similar in performance. If you start to take the game seriously, you will want to upgrade pieces and parts as time goes on.

However, a basic starter set, and a read through the Ben Hogan book will get you started in the right direction. You are in a fantastic position that you are asking for advice before you start. too often (I did this myself) I just went out and started playing, and learned alot of bad habits, bad swing technique, etc. Now I am having to unlearn the bad to relearn the good. Believe it or not, you are in an excellent position in that you can start without having to unlearn the bad.

No offense here man, but I don't think it will make a flip

The hybrids, while I have never used them, are very popular with some golfers as they are easier to hit. Looks like the 4 and 5 are hybrids rather than irons. Makes for a beginner friendly set as many in that price range will be. If I could choose, I would get irons, 4-pw or whatever. But I really don't think the difference is that big to a brand new golfer. As others have stated, if you get into golf, and I am sure you will, you will be upgrading all this beginner stuff in a year or two anyway. So, who cares really. Important thing is to get a 30 minute lesson from a local pro on the right grip, stance, and ball position. I can't emphasize this enough. Your buds, dad, who ever will be quick to tell you what to do and how to do it. Don't listen. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Get a $200 set of clubs from Walmart and take them straight to your local PGA pro. You will be fast on your way to a good golf game if you do this. Just stay within your budget. These Dunlop, Top Flite, etc.. full sets in the bag with putter and all are great ways to get into the game. Millions sold for this reason. Get out and have fun man.
