Hello sandtrap!

I am new here and was excited to see people were offering help in analyzing swings. I definitely need your help. I have been playing for about 11 years. In high school I played JV and then varsity golf and shot in the mid-80s. Its been downhill since then and now I shoot around 90s (all over, from birdie, par, to double... not just consitent bogies), and no amount of practice seems to help me improve. I've reached the point that I don't enjoy the game anymore because I am so inconsistent and feel stuck.

Major swing concerns:
1) power/distance: I am 6'2'' and have never had much power. An occasional drive will get maybe 230yards. My 7 iron maybe goes 155 yards.
2) consistency: I used to have a draw, but now I sometimes hit it straight, and sometimes go left or right. with my driver I occasionally will get isolated huge fade/slide, or hooks.

I have compared my frame by frame swing with tiger and it is apparent I am having hip turn issues (big old slide). This was told to me years ago by a pro and I never figured out how to fix it.

Can you help point out anything else you see that may be the root of my problems. Could it all be my hips? Or is it a problem upstream leading to a cascade. Please post drills or a way to work on correcting what you see.

Thank you so much for your help. I'm too poor at this time to get a set of lessons, the price has really increased in 10 years. - Justin in MN

  1. Your stance looks really narrow for a driver swing.
  2. It looks like you're teeing the ball (hard to tell) in the dead center of your stance. Tee the ball up closer to just inside your left foot.
  3. Your hips look really quiet through impact. You got to get those babies rotating through and clearing. That gives you the rubber band effect and power.

Look at Anthony Kim, he's a little guy and bombs them out there. He's all abs/core muscles.

As you start doing this you'll find you'll slice them off at first. A good drill to use the power in your core and keeping your arms in sync is the 9 to 3 drill: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index....owtopic=146842

It's a really long thread but there are some good nuggets in there!

Also, there is Shawn Clement. He offers free instruction on YouTube. He explains things well and on top of it all, he's just a super human being.

Thanks Gill, the 9 to 3 drill looks exactly what I need. I remember my old teachers having me work with an impact bag, and to put a stake off my left side to stop my shifting. Apparantly they didn't work well for me, but I must have been having the same problems since early on. I downloaded Slicefixers PDF thingy which explains the drill better. Interesting story about that guy and how he developed such a sound swing.

I'll check out the youtube guy too. If I start to get improvement I'll post update photos. I'm ready to start the painful process of reforming my swing, =o.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
