Gang,

I just put a steel-shafted Wilson persimmon driver in the bag, old club I've had for years. Gonna take it to the range & see how it hits. May bring it along to a round for fairways.

Any of you still carry a persimmon either regularly or on occasion?

Just a word of caution... old persimmon heads can dry out and become brittle over time. They were also designed at a time when balata balls were favored and may not stand up to a constant beating with the 2 piece range rocks you get today.

I speak from experience on this one and still have the splintered shards of what was once a beautiful Macgregor Tommy Armour persimmon driver.

Weapons of choice:
Irons/wedges: Titleist Tour Grind
Driver:Titleist 909D2
3 Wood: Tour Edge Exotic
Putter: Odyssey White Hot

It has to have been almost 20 years.......

I still have a set of Titleist persimmons up in the attic somewhere that I keep threatening to drag out though. There's still nothing quite like the feeling of hitting a balata right on the screws with a persimmon driver.

I don't miss the days of 210 yard drives though......

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li

Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

i recently took a mint condition RAM persimmon driver out to the range that i bought on ebay. i used to use one when i was a kid, and i dont remember them being this hard to hit. i think like the other poster said, its because of the balls and the fact that the range balls are rock hard and the old balata balls worked better with wood drivers. i couldnt hit this thing worth a crap and it felt HORRIBLE. but again, up until i was about 14 years old (im 40 now), thats all i used to use.

I have a whole set on the wall in my gameroom. Grips are so old and slick I'd hate to even try to hit them.

I bet you still have steel spikes too

Kidding of course. I actually took a strong look at the new Louisville persimmon driver. Classy looking club, moderate sized clubhead, and the sound of wood, well, you know. It has its appeal. Good luck with ole Bessy. Here is the Louisville driver I saw... http://www.louisvillegolf.com/index.php/cPath/1_99 .
