Depends on what you can do.  Rifles and PX are the SAME THING... a "flighted" Rifle is the same as a "flighted" PX.  THe only difference is the name.  When True Temper bought Rifle (formerly Brunswick) all they did was change the name.  This is according to Golf magazine (who'd get flogged and have advertising dollars taken from them if it wasn't true), in an article about Phil Mickelson.  He went to TT, worried they'd change things after their purchase (he's been a Rifle/PX guy for what seems like forever).  They reassured him nothing would change, which is why he stayed with their shafts.

Now, there IS a difference between a "flighted" model and a non-"flighted".  The bend point (BP; also known as Kick Point) lowers as the shaft gets longer in a "flighted" model.  In non-"flighted" models, the BP stays constant.  These nominal changes allegedly allow a golfer to hit a higher shot with a 4i, and a lower, more penetrating (and higher-spinning) shot with a PW.  All this little change does is lower or raise a club's effective loft at impact.  A low-BP shaft, coupled with a 23* head, can make the effective loft at impact 23.1+ degrees at impact (depending on the amount of bend).  Obviously, the ball will fly higher.  The high-BP/more spin isn't that magical, either: the high-BP will make the effective loft lower: in essence, taking a 47* PW and turning it into something less.  It'll obviously fly lower than "normal", thanks to the decrease in loft.  It'll still spin a bunch, because there's still a bunch of loft there.

If you're that torn, and these are your only two options, get the less expensive set.  From there, learn how to play the ball up (increase launch) or back (decrease launch) in you stance, for the same effect.

ive been considering new shafts because my nippon 950gh regular flex hits the ball a bit high in my Staff FG tours and because they are designed to hit the ball mid-high trajectory controlling trajectory is quite difficult. hitting my knockdown i have to club up quite a bit and barely swing as to ride out the flex and kp to getting the ball up just right. have been considering PX graphite in my driver and tihen it caught my eye about the PX graphite as well as the PX steel iron and rifle iron shafts.

anyways...ive heard the PX are quite shuttering-harsh unless hit pinpoint perfect. and ive also heard the rifles are truly smooth. either way i want something with splended tracjectory control but not too much more weight in comparison to my 950gh's.

the flighted seems like a very interesting concept for the rifles.

but im also pretty interested in the PX shafts that were mentioned earlier as "regular" flex but not for the weak swing in mind.

ive been playing for 2-3 years and have been excelling in my swing speed now that my body is getting used to the motions as well as creating better lag.

do either of these shafts have a lighter weight with still a mid-regular to stiff type flex point?

i like the weight of my 950gh shafts because as nippon suggests they are to be lightweight like graphite in comparison to most shafts but still have a bit more weight for steel-like control. and it truly feels like a wonderful medium. just can keep the ball down with these.

I play PX and I've had no problems with harshness. More often then not, the people that complain about them being harsh are playing the PX in too stiff a flex. They'll come from an DG S300 or KBS Stiff and expect to be able to hit the 6.0, but in reality the 5.5 is the stiff, and the 6.0 is stiff+.

I have flighted shafts and I like them, they feel great and I get nice distance and trajectory.

I know PX has a lightweight model, the PXi I believe, but I haven't hit that so I can't comment on the feel. They're heavier than the Nippons, but lighter than the standard PX.

Do they even still make the rifles? I can find them in a few places, but certain flexes and specs are hard to come by. RP took down the rifle specs from their site, even though TT's fitting system still recommends rifles. Looks like they might have discontinued them, though I don't know officially.

True Temper has discontinued the "old" Rifles, but will be coming out with a new Rifle shaft soon.  This, according to the True Temper steel shaft engineer I spoke with at the PGA Show last Friday.

I liked the overall feel of the Flighted Rifles better so I went with them instead.

I can make a partial comparison. In 2010 season, I played with X20 irons with Uniflex shafts (106-121 gr.). Last season, I played X20 Tours with PX rifle-flighted 5.0 shafts (108-120 gr.).

In comparison, the Uniflex was OK, but didn't have that good a feel. The PX R.F had a livelier feel, and the flighting gives a little boost on 3 and 4 iron launch, and I can hit them again as long as I keep my head still. Also, the PX shafts feel "livelier" than the Uniflex.

( Note: 2011 was my best season in a long time on Par 3s. But, I had a sprained R wrist and was wild with driver, hence a jump in HDCP).

In general, the PX Rifle-Flighted give higher launch angle on long irons, and lower launch angle on the short irons. The PX Rifle give a slight boost on launch for all irons, but a lower max height on ball flight. Also, the PX group has been recommended for someone with a quick start to the downswing. The Rifle shafts w/o the PX name have their own set of descriptors.

You might want to look at a comparison chart of Dynamic Golf, Project X, and KBS shaft families. The grid compares various shafts on FCM and weight, and includes some hard-step and soft-step variations. sia.golf posted it few days ago.

Also, go to the TT/PX and KBS websites. The sites describe the details of each of the shafts and what they are designed for. You can get a better idea of what to expect if you do a little research.

One factor is shaft weight. With somewhat lighter shafts I could pick up some clubhead speed. At the St. Louis Golf Expo, I got best clubhead speed/control balance with shafts in the 95-105 gram range.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
