The problem with beginner sets is they wont resell for anything. The money you save on a beginner set could be made up by buying clubs that are a step up and selling them when you want better clubs.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll pick up the Adams Tight Lies Hybrids/Irons and Driver/Woods from Rock Bottom Golf when I decide to buy.

I'll pick up a putter locally after trying a few.

I started playing 3 years ago and bought that Top Flite XL set after a year playing with a hand-me down set. I broke 100 last season with the XL set. I will probably play with it for another year or 2 and gradually replacing the clubs as the need arises and is well justified. Needless to say, I am quite happy with the set. oh yeah, I also dinged the top of my driver, God knows how. I often try other clubs when going out with friends, etc. and so far, haven't been able to tell the differences between the more expensive equiment (some of my friends are very good golfers, others are equipment nuts). So
I am saving money for lessons (I have yet to start taking lessons), should I feel I need them.

Good luck.

An advantage to a rookie set is it comes complete, and they are cheap. If you buy it complete with woods/irons/putter/wedges and bag you can start replacing clubs as you wish.

Buying marquee brand golf equipment can get pricey fast. Thats just my 2 cents.

Look at Founders Club brand at Golftown. I believe they are exclusive to Golftown in Canada. I bought my fiance a Founders Club set complete with stainless steel irons, titanium driver, lifetime warranty and free fitting for about $320. I brother in law snagged a mens set with all the perks for just under $400. He has used them to years and his only complaint so far is that the shafts are too whippy for him. I have used them many times and they are quality clubs.

I bought a Tight Lies Driver/Wood set on eBay for $80, and Heavy Putter D3-DF for $10. Now just trying to close on a Nickent Hybrid/Iron set and all I will need is a bag, which is best bought locally, they are $ to ship. All said and done, quality clubs at a ~$120 more than the Top Flite set... including shipping etc.

All my clubs got here yesterday. They all feel really nice to swing. The Heavy Putter is a lot easier to control, and I'm glad I went with the shorter 34".
I can't wait to get them to the driving range... maybe tonight.

All I need is a bag and my lessons.
