Never think of a number. All of my best rounds are ones where I just go out and maybe on the last hole I'll look over the card and think "Oh, I'm only 4 over" and shoot in the mid 70s.

The broader you are thinking about your game (a round number, having to par a hole, etc.) the worse you will invariably do. You have to get to a point where all you are thinking about is the shot at hand and where you want that shot 1) to end up and 2) not end up. Playing great golf is not about the shots you hit, it's about not getting hurt by the shots you don't hit. Ben Hogan even said that if he hit 3 shots in a round exactly as he wanted, it was a good day.

The biggest mistake higher handicappers make is not taking into account pin position. You really have to evaluate not only if it's up or back, but also the slope of the green and where the trouble lies. Always hit to the area that is the best combination of below the hole and away from trouble - which might even be a few yards short of the green.

Then take the course to the range. It's easy to start hitting your 6-iron really well when you've hit 15 in a row before it. Doesn't happen on the course. Play your golf course on the range - picture the first hole, hit a driver, see where it goes, play the appropriate next shot from there, and continue.

Everyone needs to re-read that, it's outstanding advice......and works extremely well as a pre-round warmup too. How many people widh they could start their round over again after the 3d or 4th hole? Well, you can..... I hit a dozen balls or so just to stretch the muscles and loosen the joints. Then I "play" the first 3 holes, in order, twice. Another dozen balls. Hit some chips and head to the putting green. When I step to the first tee, I've already "played" 6 holes. No first tee jitters and perfect visualization of how I'm going to approach the first 3 holes.

what i think you should do is to think about golf this way, every shot is a new shot, that means that you shouldnt think about the next shot or even the shot hit before, just get up there, think about what you want this ball to do , within reason, be as relaxed as possible, whistle or something and then let it fly. hope that helps

    • Played in the first round of Shawnee Hills  course tournament. went 42+46. Just lost energy on the back nine.  Lots of pars and way too many big scores. Course has a lot of areas to lose a golf ball. This is the adjusted score.  I had to return to the tee twice. The first the guy I played with didn’t tell me my ball bounced into the trees behind the green. 😡 the 2nd one I hit a decent draw over the corner of a slight dog leg left. I didn’t know 15-20 yards from the fairways was nasty weeds. I also 4 putted and 3 putted a few times. I flubbed like two chips. Too long of backswing.  I was happy with my ball striking. Probably B-. Found a bit of something on the range before the round. I’m starting to actually feel my right arm position better with what I am working on. I striped some irons today.
    • Birdied #4 at Quail Brook today. Tees were up today and it was only 146 to the flag. Hit it 12’ right of the hole and made the putt. That’s just my second birdie of the front nine at my home course this year? Man I’m playing like trash.
