a. Golfers that score well are good golfers.

Amen.

And I would add that I think while it MAY be appropriate to "judge" group c, it is not appropriate to judge group b. We all have to start somewhere.

The a-b distinction is irrelevant. Don't bother thinking about it unless you're weighing a bet against 'em. The c-d is a fair one (although I disagree that 4 hours is the cutoff, I think 4.5 is the cutoff between "acceptable" and "unacceptable").

The difference is that speed of play affects others. Who cares about someone else's score?

I got stuck behind a 5some that I could have taken if they played best shot and me by my self, and wouldnt let us play through.

I would of had a problem with a fivesome not letting me through, and I also don't have a problem being firm with a slower group about playing through. If they are really slow, slow to the point of holding up the course, and the course is wide open in front of them, then I'll insist on playing through. Obviously you can't do this if you haven't caught up to them on the tee, but when you do that and they aren't receptive I just go ahead and play through. I can play fast when necessary and a few times I've had to do just this. If they still have a problem with a faster group going through I point out to them how they are bottling up the whole course and that they have to let the faster groups through, if they still don't like it they can call the clubhouse about it. I've only done this on my regular course and it's because I'm playing with other fast players, but sometimes you've got to take control of a bad situation. If I'm on a course that I'm not a regular at I'll call the club house and let them handle it. I've never had a problem doing this when I've had to do it. Let's face it it's tough to argue about something when you put your drive down the pipe, chip up on the green and putt out while the slow group is still milling about looking for their balls, and that's really the only kind of group I'm going to play through no matter what they have to say about it.

I have a related topic:

Once the course is full and "slow" how does it speed back up again? It seems like there is not way for the line of groups to move faster if they have been moving slowly and there is no space in front of any of the groups. Its like traffic on the freeway. once everyone is stopped, they can't all just start going fast again once the accident is cleared. Seems like once the play gets slow, it must stay slow until people stop teeing off 1 and the course can empty.

yeah i went late enough today that the sprinklers were turned off. As for the two old men i "hit into" they were at the 100 to go mark on a 365 yard hole. I tee off with a 1960's wilson sam snead 3 wood. The only reason they came across my ball even was because they were circling back looking for the other guys ball. Thats the only reason i came within 20 yards of them. They didnt even know i was there, much less trailing them for 3 holes.

Ahh... understood. It seemed like you meant you hit and the ball rolled up to within 20 yards of where they were addressing their shots. My bad.

Yet in your earlier post you said this...

I was trailing these two old men for about 3 holes. I don't think they knew i was there because they were playing from the yellows. Anyways i hit a pretty good drive hoping they would notice and let me play through.

Clearly you hit in to them hoping that they would notice.

Which means that you didn't do it by accident. There's just no excuse for doing something like that.

Unless they are slow or disrespectful of the rules and etiquette of the game, then I don't care how good or bad they are or what they are wearing or what clubs they are using... etc.

But let me add my own "rant." Discussion of 9-hole scores as a round of golf. A round of golf is 18-holes. Playing only 9 holes... "Thats not golf at all."
