This may seem an odd question from someone with a wedge pitching wedge (as opposed to one from his club set), but why don't many players' iron sets have a gap wedge?

I understand the Nike Forged Blades have a 50° PW, and so a gap wedge doesn't make sense in that set. But this loft in a pitching wedge is rare these days.

Many players' irons have 47 or 48° pitching wedges, but no 51 or 52° gap wedge option. As best I can tell, the only players' irons with gap wedge offerings are Titleist AP2 and Ping i10. Even these companies don't do it with all their players' irons: ZM and S-57 both stop at pitching wedge.

Is there a particular reason for this? It seems to be that this is something that would be in demand. I'm starting to think I may prefer a blade/cut muscle type club for the non-sand wedges instead of the wedges. Not enough to go and buy new clubs just for that, but it's something I'd think about on my next set (whenever that is). Maybe the good players (as opposed to me) almost uniformly prefer wedges?

I didn't know of this. My X-22's PW is 45* and the Gap Wedge is 52* but I went with a 50* & 54* Vokey

Probably something that's been stuck for a long time. 3-PW+SW. I don't mind, I don't use clubs from iron sets with over 50 loft anyways. Suited me well that my MP-57's don't come with a SW. I use Vokey's 52.08 and 58.12, prefer clubs with that loft to be small and slim so they can easily cut through grass and get under the ball.

I didn't want to start a new thread... so I'll post this question here:

Is a GAP wedge the same as an A (approach) wedge? My Nike Sumo² iron set has an A wedge that has a 50° loft... and my sand wedge is 55° and pitching wedge is 46°.

Yeah.

For the general question, many players sets (like my ap2's) can be ordered with a A wedge instead of a 3iron.

I don't know why, but I wish more would. I pretty much only use my 52º from the fairway on full shots. I would love to have that club match my regular irons so the consistency would be easier. I have used it enough that it isn't a problem, but I think for many players it would be a great alternative than offering 2 and 3 irons which very few people play anymore thanks to hybrids. When I bought new clubs last year I only bought 7 clubs instead of the normal 8 since I didn't get a 3-iron. I would have bought 8 clubs if there was a matching gap wedge.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Yeah.

Thanks. I bought a matching 3 hybrid and sand wedge for my set which included 4h-Aw.

My original set of OS2 irons had a 45* PW and a 55* SW. I have since replaced them with TP wedges of 48*and 54*, but now I find myself feeling the need for something in between, and havw been thinking about a 52*and maybe having it bent to 51* to help fill in the gap.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
