I have been playing the callaway X Hot for about 5 months. I really like the distance, but i hate the shaft length. the thing feels like its longer than my driver and the head is so far away at address.

im very inconsistent with it, but when i hit it on the screws it'll go 250 off the tee or deck. Im thinking about going to a shorter 3 wood for more control, but im worried that im going to lose a lot of that distance.

will that be the case? i have never hit a 3 wood as far as this one, so im reluctant to let it go. i feel like i can try to harness the club, but that might be a waste of time if i can get comparable distance from a shorter 3wood. My ss is 101mph

According to the Callaway site, you're playing a 44" shaft. My V-Steel has a 43". I think for sure you would lose some distance going to a shorter shaft, the question I can't answer for you is how much?

propbably a dumb question...BUT i will ask anyway
your not going to replace it b/c of its length, right?
just cut it down and re-grip it

sounds like the cheaper option to me

I just cut down my 3-wood a few months ago, and after the initial re-adjustment period really like it. I put a new softer shaft in, and had them cut it down about 1.5" and pour some lead into the head to keep the swing weight up. It's a little lighter now (D1), but I hit it off the deck a lot better -- no more topsies and I know where it's going. I was 247 out this afternoon on a par 5 and decided to go for it with my 3-wood even though the green was surrounded by bunkers, and I killed it. Luckily for me it only went 230 and was the perfect lay up shot short of the bunkers.

If you like the distance on it and arent afraid of losing some of it, just cut it down and regrip like said above.

don't forget, cutting it down will make the shaft stiffer, so keep that in mind. That will also have an effect on distance.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
