Good article on "Loss Aversion"......I think this may be why I end up with tap-in pars......that and the fact I tend to lag puts rather than charge the hole......it's a good ready anyway:

nice article, I will try to focus more on my par putts. My problem is that I relax after my first boogie and let more boogies follow instead of comming back with a par or even birdie like the pros.

Last round I was 1 under until the 5th hole and boogie the next 3 holes with missed putts, 3 putts and missed par putts.

Same here. It almost like I let my guard down or something weird like that.

When I start the round I am focus and usually do well and my focus will wander and I will miss easy tap in near the back nine when I start to get tired and too relax.

maybe I need to run and build up my cardio for the back nine.

I'm the exact opposite. I seem to get stronger as we go. It's always within the first 5 or 6 I blow up, only to come back low on the back 9.

I do the same thing, if I can avoid a blow up in the first 2, I will be alright. And no matter how well I do on the first 9, I always do better on the second 9.

There's a simple solution to that: Make yourself believe all your birdie putts are par putts. Believe me - it works.

I make 4-5 birdies per round now - the problem is those pesky doubles and triples that pop up when I get stupid off the tee.

This is me exactly. Played in a four day tournament the last four days and I made a ton of par saves from 4 and 5 feet. I also had probably 7-9 birdie putts over the course of the four days from the same length and I made one of them. Really weird how the mind works. I can feel my mind working on par putts almost as if I will them into the hole. It's hard to explain. When I have a birdie putt I know if I don't make it, the worst I get is a par. When I have a par putt, I konw if I don't make it I end up with bogey and that's not what I want so I have 10 times the focus it seems.

For us, the two of the three hardest par 4's on the course are 1 and 2. One because it's the longest and has fairway and greenside bunkers, (plus a tricky, undulating green). Two because it's 390 yards but with a 30 degree dogleg right at the 150 yard marker. Trees left, trees right, and bunkers through the turn. Even though i expect to shoot in the mid to high 70's, if i play those two in bogey, i'm ok! I know i can roll up some pars as the day goes on. Then if i make 3 more bogeys the other 16 holes, i still shoot 77. Toss in a birdie, and i'm 76. Anytime i make those first two in par, i'm happy.

I'm extremely "unfussy" about balls. I'll play anything white and round!  I''ll even play the colors i find.

I hate missing putts...period. I don't care if it is for eagle or double bogey...I'm trying equally hard to get that ball in the hole. But then, I also think I'm going to make that 25 footer with 4 feet of break.

Now, I just need to give myself some more of those 5-15 ft birdie putts!

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
