When I first took up golf, I didn’t know many golfers, but my Brother in Law always bragged about how good he was at golf. He lived out of town, so I called him and asked him for advice and what clubs to buy etc. At the time it all his advice sounded good as I didn’t know any better.

When I took up golf, I really worked hard to get decent – lots of lessons and lots of practice and I got down to an honest 30 hdcp in a about year and within 3 years I got down to an honest 17 (two kids later I have just recently got myself back to an 18). Mean while my brother in law was a “scratch” golfer that didn’t keep a handicap but tended to shoot 1 or 2 over par.

So in year 3 of me golfing I organize a golf trip and invite my BIL along as he is this “great golfer”. As the trip gets closer his game begins to “get worse” every time I talk to him on the phone.

He flies in to town a few days before the trip and we decide to go play a pitch and putt with my wife (his sister) for fun. That is when I find out my BIL couldn’t golf to save his life. And the rules he plays by is unlimited mulligan’s oh ya and you don’t count a gimme as a stroke.

On the trip we played 5 rounds in 3 days and my BIL broke 130 only once. I still chuckle to myself about the advice I took from him for those early years when in reality he was no better then I was after my first week of lessons.

Thats a funny story. It reminds me of all the excuses myself and the guys I play with comes up with between the planning for a trip to tee time. At the time of planning you get all kinds of bragging..but as tee time comes around they havent been shooting very well or their wifes mothers dog dies and now they cant concentrate...etc. I would like to have a dime for every time I heard on the first tee, "man my back, shoulder, arm, wrist.... etc sure started acting up this morning." And if they are shooting well you dont hear anymore about that broke back....but if they are not...by the time the round ends you would think they should be in traction the pain is so bad..LOL

You didnt tell us what your BIL's excuses were...bet they were good ones!!

I do not consider myself to be a great golfer by any means, but I can scrape the ball around OK. However, I've got friends who I play with on rare occasions who have never seen me play well and think I'm a total hack. Funny thing is, when playing with them it's pretty much true. But then I also have a couple friends that I play with who have never seen me shoot bad and think I'm a great golfer. I don't know if I am trying to hard with some people and not with others or what, but it can be down right amusing. Earlier this year I shot a career best 72 then played two days later with a couple of my friends who think I'm a hack and shot a 95.

I can understand claiming a 10 handicap when you most likley play closer to a 15 or even 20, but get to scratch from a 36 is a very tall tale..lol.

I'm with PiKapp23. There are some people I just don't play well with. For a good year or two all of my worst rounds were with my brother-in-law. I usually played better than him, but not much (still true on many occasions). I know he was thinking I was full of BS when I would tell him about my good rounds. Eventually, I shot a few good rounds with him and I think he has a little more faith in my ability these days.
I don't know if I try to hard with him or if I just slack off and lose focus. Sometimes I will get out of my game and play just to beat him which means if he makes a bad shot I start thinking "I don't need to do anything special here" and that spells trouble. :)
His game is steadily improving though, which means it elevates my game when playing with him.

I am a 10 or so and I definitely play like a 20 at times. What a stupid game. Good story and that is why I don't lie.

I always seem to play best with my dad who's a 5-7 HCP. Play worst with my father-in-law who's probably a 30.

That's the worst golf lie story I've ever heard! I mean, I know guys who claim 5 to 10 strokes better than their true average (like their handicap is from their best 5-10 rounds ever, not their most recent best 10 out of 20, or whatever the formula is... can't remember). But being a 130 shooter claiming scratch is pretty rich.

And I feel the good with some friends, bad with others. I think I play to the level of those I'm with. My best golf buddy is probably 3-4 strokes better than me (he's an 80-82 from the blues at mid-toughness courses, I'm more 83-87). But my brother was in town recently and suddenly I'm a mid 90s player for two rounds. Then the three of us play together at the end of my brother's visit and I put up an 84 again...

haha, that's a great story. I played with a guy once that said he was a +3 and played tournaments all the time and I ended up one stroke better than him on every hole for 9 holes, giving me insane yardages like hitting his 56* 125y and only making it half the distance.

For some reason, the coures I play on, everyone thinks I'm a lot better than I really am. Maybe it's because I play where the course is more popular with the elderly haha.

I did meet someone yesterday on the course that actually made me play really well. He gave me his card and we're gonna play again friday. He just kept telling me what's gonna happen. when I chip up, he just turns over and says, you gonna make par? make a great putt. Before I hit my 2nd shot, he said, take a birdie. I put it to an inch. Last hole, he says, finish up with 2 birdies today. 1st shot, 4 iron right into the middle of the fairway around the corner with a draw. tells me, finish with 2 birds. Ball above feet, hook a 7 iron against a 2 club wind onto the hole's tier on the green. Walk up to my putt, he says, you're making birdie? went with it and said yes, and sank a 15 ft putt. It felt like magic haha. If I ever got the chance to need a caddie, I'd take him lol.

Uncanny, isn't it?! I played a tournament last summer and was paired up with my sister-in-law. (9 hole alternate shot, WTF?!?!) and hit the driver well and that was about all I could do. It was embarrasing. But the best was yet to come. The 18 hole strokeplay event was the following day and blew up to a 97 and lost, lost to my father-in law!!!!! Un-freaking believeable. Of course I keep hearing it from the family about what happened leaving out of course the 76 I shot on the last day of the club championship but that's how it goes sometimes. It's not tension, nor am I nervous. I get along well with the family. But for whatever reason I am 5-10 strokes worse playing with them.

I have the opposite problem. The few times I've golfed with co workers I've had career rounds.

I once did a quick 9 after work with a co worker and shot a 39, with a lipped out 3 putt. It was about a week before our company tournament. While teeing up my first drive I have to listen to him about how "good" I am, right before I sliced my ball into the next fair away in front of half the company.. Another time I agreed to golf with my boss and his two friends. All week I listened to him talk about how he shot an 85 the weekend before. We made a friendly wager and he agreed to give me 5 strokes. Well that day I shot an 89 (instead of my usual 93-97) and whipped him straight up by 4 strokes. According to him I was sandbagging haha..

Been there - shot a 41 for 9 a few weeks ago with a golfer I never playe with before - I got called a sandbagger for "claiming" to be a 18 hdcp

I usally shot in the 70's for 9 holes (I know I suck, but I just started playing a few months ago, took two months off and now have been back for two weeks). The other day I teamed up with someone and I told him how bad I was and that I was trying to break 70. Ended up shooting a 58. I told him he was good luck

When I used to live at home with the parents, I would go out and play with my dad and some of his co-workers. Talk about some cheatin' SOBs! One guy in particular, when he started playing regularly with the group, he had only been playing a couple years. He was a natural athlete, so it didn't take him long to develop a pretty good swing. Strategy was always his problem. It was funny, when he was scoring poorly, he would always count every stroke, every penalty shot, etc. If he started out scoring really well, he would quickly cut out early with weak excuses, like "My shoulder hurts, I'm just going to the practice green" or "I forgot I have to go home and do yard work".

Saturdays there would be 10-12 of us playing skins or some sort of money game. And you better believe he would roll up with his "20 handicap". After three Saturdays of him shooting 80, 81, or 82 with his mystical handicap we told him to come clean or don't play.
The thing was he really thought he was 5 or 10 hdcap because he always played with unlimited mulligans (even on putts) and then you never had to count a gimme on your card. By those rules I could shoot about 20 under par.

The group I play with now uses the following rules regarding mulligans: For each mulligan you take, anyone else in the group gets to call a reverse mulligan. So if you take a mully off the 1st tee, then chip in for birdie on the 4th hole, someone in the group will make you chip it again. Since we started doing that, I can't remember anyone taking a mully.
