I am looking to get some new irons and was wondering which irons people reccomended i was thinking of getting the titleist aps's or the mizuno mp-57 /mx-200 ( i am open to other options) i am looking for a club which has the ability to work the ball. my ball striking is good and consistent

Can't go wrong with either selection. Just make sure you get the proper shafts. You will get a bunch of responses like this: I have XYZ club they are great.

My choice -- Titleist ZB, they offer a great blend of forgiveness in the longer irons and excellent feel in the short irons.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Yup, can't go wrong with either. Whichever you can get a good deal on and feel the best is the way to go!

I have them, I really like them. Now we've got that out of the way.

One thing to check. Titleist AP2s have weaker lofts when compared with many other clubs (don't know about the Mizuno clubs you are considering), but you may want to check vs. those or your current, in case the lofts and potential for apparent loss of distance is an issue for you, then you can figure out how to address that issue, or not address it, as you see fit.

Definitely-if I were forced to replace my irons for some strange reason I'd probably go with the ZBs or AP2s. Try them both out if you can. I think the weaker (i.e. standard) lofts-with a PW of 47* or so is preferable to sets with a 44* or 45* wedge. My Macgregors and Pings both have 47* PW, and it's a nice gap from there to a standard 52* gap wedge.

You can't go wrong with either set. I'm partial to the Mizuno clubs myself.

If you're mixing sets - AP1 and AP2, or MP and MX, find out about how to mix them. I think the AP1 and AP2 were meant to be integrated, despite seeming differences in lofts - meaning wherever the cutoff is, your distances should be consistent. And there are a couple of other threads on here about mix-and-match Mizuno sets.

Both are great choices for irons. If I were in your feet (and at your handicap level) I'd mix the MP-57 and the MX-200. (Or the MP-52 and the MX-200)

And yes, you can remove the blue decals from the MX-200 :P

I am a Titleist tragic and have the AP2's and have been frustrated with them since I got them. The previous set was 690CB's which were/are great.

Worked out its the shafts which are the difference. 690's have DGS300's and the AP2's have ProjectX 5.5s. Have tried the AP2's with DGS300's and the difference really is noticeable - so they are about to get reshafted.

Bought the AP2's from a store that didnt have a driving range - just some nets. So they felt awesome off the face when swinging easy in the nets. But faced with a 6 iron over water to a tight green - and the desire to jump on it a bit - caused a lot of angst and results that I didnt previously get with the 690's.

So hit them on course in normal competition if you can!

i used to hit titleist 990bs. Got me a set of mizzy MP30's and all i want to hit now are Mizzy's. Dont get me wrong, LOVE titleist. BUT, there is somethin to say for the way Mizuno makes their clubs. they are just SO soft, and just feeel great off the clubface.

I have the MP 60s. I like them alot. They aren't very forgiving and if you mis-towards the toe at all, they just don't go anywhere.

I like the guys idea above about the mix. I got mine new for 400 so couldn't do that but if I were going to buy irons right now with no worries about budget, I would go to a well respected fitter, see where I hit on the face, let him have some imput and exactly what shaft I should get. Then probably get the MP62 p,9,8, then either the MP 52 or MX 200 7, 6, 5, then the FLI High 3 iron.

I highly recomend the Fli-Hi as opposed to the traditional hybrid. Much better for me and a great driving iron.

I went through the testing process for new irons back in the winter and tried what seems like an infinite number of models before deciding on the irons I purchased. The AP2's are nice irons and have a little more forgivness than the Mizuno MP-57's, probably closer to the MP-52's, but they didn't feel as good to me as the Mizuno player irons (the MP series). The MX-200 is among the best of the 'Game Improvement' iron category and I would consider them to the on the 'players' side of that category. The AP2's and Mizuno MP irons will all be quite 'workable', but will not have a high level of forgivness (but still have some). If you feel you need more forgiveness then the MX-200 (or AP1's) might be a better fit - they will be less workable, though.

When it comes right down to it, it's all about what you like the look, feel and price of and what you are going to feel the most comfortable with when you're over the ball. One thing to remember when you are looking at clubs is to not decide what you want until you try them and also consider other brands and models (such as Adams Idea Pro/Idea Pro Golf and other manufacturers). It's not unusual, if you go in with an open mind, to find you prefer something other than what you expected. There is a lot of good equipment out there and not everyone prefers the same thing.

I was a Mizuno guy until I hit the MP-57 and AP2 irons back to back on the golf course. Both had PX 5.5 shafts. I loved the feel, the trajectory, the playability, and the forgiveness of the AP2 irons. For me, the only area the MP-57 irons equalled the AP2 irons was in feel. I have since hit the MP-52 and MP-62 irons and still prefer the AP2 irons.

    • Hey Sam, good to see you. 🙂
    • Have you tried hanging?  Find a pull up bar or whatever.  Grab it with both hands and hang without your feet touching the floor.  I had bad issues over last winter and a friend suggested it.  It was like is decompresses everything in my spine and I have been fine ever since.
    • Believe it or Not! I am so excited.  Yesterday, on a hot and windy day, I played a 9 hole course in Claflin. Kansas. 1st 9 = 54 2nd 9 = 43   I am going to try and go back out late this afternoon and play 18 holes at Hays, Kansas.  My 3 hybrid came in yesterday and I am really anxious to try it out.  WooHoo 🥳 🙌 👏  Retired Old Man, Terry

    • Looking forward to reading and contributing to some of the great discussions here. I've "played" for a few years, but very much feel like I'm in the beginner/new to golf stage. I'm wanting to set some attainable goals for this year, and hopefully share some of it here along the way. Thanks for reading!
