When you went to GG, you didn't get a report of the balls that are custom fitted to you? When I hit 10 balls with my driver I got this report:

Wow, that is awesome. I should probably do that. My launch angle was usually only 9-12.

I played a practice round yesterday and played a Srixon Z Star and a Top Flite D2 Feel.

I'd hit a shot, drop the other ball and hit the shot again. On most shots the balls ended within a yard or two of each other (woods and irons).

My SS with driver is usually btwn 100-105.

Those "premium" balls pay for a lot of "premium" marketing.

I have a nearly identical swing speed to yours (98-99 MPH) and I picked up at least ten yards when I switched to the Srixon AD333 ball from the Pro-V1x. They won't spin quite as much around the green, but are still a great ball.

I think I am actually going to try the Callaway Tour iX. My dad can get me a dozen, new for $35.99.

Very much disagree and I have seen the difference with my own eyes.

to be honest im sick of hearing of titleist this, titleist that when it comes to balls...

i get that they're the most popular, but i cant be the only one who realized when Cink won the open, that the first thought through my mind was "THANK GOD, I don't have to see a commercial saying titleist won at the Open"

personally i think the 2009 ProV1 and its 1x brother arent as durable as its predecessor. i went from the ProV's to the TP Reds and can honestly say im not turning back.

To the OP: best advice is buy sleeves of balls, ProV1/x, TP red/black, Cally HX/i or whatever brand you lean towards and give them an honest to goodness round.

I think all of the premium balls I have been looking at are, relatively speaking, pretty long. The differences which I can note are: 1) amount of spin; 2) durability; and 3) softness/feel with irons/putter. Seems like the Callaway Tour IX is a durable ball that's pretty darn long. Only thing I might not like is how firm it is with the irons/putter. I think if that is the only thing I don't like about them after using them, I could live with that or give them to my dad. I could'nt find a sample pack of the balls I'd like to demo, and buying them by the sleeve would cost far more than trying a dozen, which I don't think I will end up hating anyways. I think I will try the Tour IX and purchase a sleeve of the Pro V1X.

Went back to Golf Galaxy tonight - that makes 3 nights in a row! lol I tested the Mizuno MP-52 and MP-62 irons because I did not have my MP-14s with me. Club head speed using the conversion chart on the wall was right around 81-82 mph. I was using a 6 iron and the conversion chart is for a 5 iron if that matters (I couldn't find the 5 irons in either set). My driver is still 142-146 ball speed, or right around 100 mph swing speed. Seems like a big difference between iron and driver, 20 mph.

I couldn't get ball-fitted because no one was able to assist me with that. My question is, perhaps (a) I should not be using stiff shafts in my irons and (b) a pro-v1x or callaway tour ix might be too firm of a ball, when considering my iron club head speed???

The guy near the counter, when I was looking at balls, said that I wouldn't benefit from the v1x but also that iron club speed is not too big of a factor and to go more by driver speed. He said the tourix is a sweet ball which is durable, though and everyone loves the Bridgestone 330RX. I dunno. I do know that I want a mid to higher trajectory ball especially with my irons. Loved the MP-52s by the way!

try the 330 rx or s. I really like the old callaway hx tour though

B330 RX. My stats are very similar to yours (swing speed, launch angle, ball speed, for some reason you get 15 more yards on me). The Bridgestones work very well for me.

Thanks for all the input guys and gals. I hope to try out my new driver in the real world env't this weekend, hopefully with the RX, ix, and V1X.

If you want a great feeling ball for a great price try the Bridgestone e5+. You can get 12 of them for under $25.00 and they have a great soft feeling. (urethane ball like the V1's and other premium balls)

I like the V1's as does everyone (and most of the premium balls) but the e5+ feels as soft to me and is much cheaper. They seem rather durable as well. I usually knick up and see paint flakes more often on the V1's for instance.

I'm not a fanboi of any company but I have to say the e5+ is pretty much the ball I buy most often now. The price is right, they get distance and they have such a soft feel for a great price.

They do spin some so if that's a problem maybe it isn't the ball for you.

Based on the many opinions and reviews available online, I decided to purchase a dozen R 330X for my father and a dozen Pro V1x for myself. We will do our own testing next week when I visit.

By the way, the 2009 Golf Digest comparison chart is very helpful. I needed a ball with slightly higher launch angle, as I currently launch around 10*-11* and I think 12* would be optimal for me. I can't wait.

Baby, if you're getting 250-280 yards out of a 100 mph swing, don't change a thing.  That's as good as it's going to get.  Use the v1x in temps over 70 and the v1 in temps under 70.  Have fun.  :)
