1) Right elbow bend. I took lessons from a golf pro at a driving range a year ago and he said to open up my swing, meaning, keep both arms straight. But I wonder, what's the consensus on this? Shouldn't the right elbow be tucked until impact? When I got into the habit of "opening up" my swing I starting hooking golf balls right and left. Well not right and left...just left. Just for the record, the golf pro sucked...I could outdrive him. So what's better a tucked right elbow or straight?

2) Losing balance on the tee shot. After my follow through all of my weight is on my left foot but then I end up with a leftward lean. Meaning I'll instinctively have to take a step with my right foot on the other side of my left foot (looks like I cross my feet for a sec while regaining balance). What's a common cause of this problem?

Thanks for the help!

1) Your right arm always bends at the top of the swing, like carrying a server's tray. I think your pro just wants to widen your swing by keeping the left arm straight for a longer time in the back swing.

2) Turn through the shot. You are probably swaying your hips instead of turning them.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
