I am looking at these 4 sets of irons, all $399.99.

Was wondering if anyone had any of these and could give m their pros/cons, durability, etc. Here they are in the order I am thinking

Callaway X18's- Leaning toward these because of Callaways known quality.

Cobra FP2's- I hit Cobra's well.

Adams IDEA a3's- Really like the idea of hybrids but question quality.

Taylormade r7's- Don't know why these are last, the other ones are so good I guess.

Any help on exp with these would help a lot.

Thanks

I started golfing with a set of callaway x14's and loved them. I'm not sure of pricing right now, but i think the x18's are definitely a good set of irons. the others are nice too (also known brands) so i think you should just demo them and see which you like the best.

Same here, I use the x14 pro's right now which I hear are the same as the x16 and x18. Great clubs! See which you feel the best with, I think you may end up with the Cobras from your statement that you hit well with them.

I recently hit the R7s and thought they were a great club. Even though they were too short for me, I was consistently hitting the ball well. I ended up getting Mizuno MX-200s though because I had a bit better feel out of them.

For $400 not much is out of your reach if you are willing to by used. I just picked up some Callaway x22 tour used for uner $400 (4-pw) and I really like them. Go hit as many as you can, get them on the range and once you find what you like shop around for a the best deal.

Mike, if you are on a budget check out www.hirekogolf.com for some quality irons. You could customize to get maybe a 4-PW or 5-PW iron set and use the money saved towards a hybrid or wedge.

Check out Wilson Ci7's as well. JuanJohn is selling them in the classifieds for around $200 and they are very good irons.

Good luck on your search.

All 4 are good, solid iron sets, but are the Callaways X18's, or X18R's? The X18R's lack a few features of the original X18's, such as a bore-thru hosel, 360 degree undercut channel, and have a different uniflex shaft. They are still a good set, but I would check out Callaway Pre-owned for for some mint X20's for your price range. As the previous poster recommended, the Wilson ci-7's are solid too. You can't go wrong with any of these choices for playability, go with what gives you the most confidence.

Here you go. Callaway x-20's brand new from a seller with a great reputation. $355 shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-CALLAWAY-X-2...d=p3286.c0.m14

How about a set of brand new, custom fitted to you, custom ordered PING G5's???? 5-10 business days.

Check with your local PING dealer. I ordered mine with the upgraded AWT shaft, corded PING grips, Cushin inserts, and my name on each clubhead for right at $400.

I've been very pleased with the set.

My father went with the G10s and is loving his. We haven't been able to discern too much difference between the two.

Good luck.

those are all good iron sets.....I would simply pick the ones that you hit the best. There is no problems with quality with any of those 4 sets....

    • When I got to Florida this season (seasons instead of years since the years overlap) one of the guys asked what I had done, said I was about twenty yards longer with my driver. Said that I had a different driver which was true but looking back it’s really the shaft that’s been the difference. It’s similar in principle to the Autoflex in that it’s light weight and also light flex. Since most of my clubs are bought used I have difficulty finding senior shafts most of the time and being old and slow that’s what I need. Bought the Callaway driver, for several years I preferred Ping drivers, because they only had a couple of used drivers with senior shafts in my price range and it’s been probably the best I’ve had. Longer and very forgiving, decent distance even on my mishits and almost always in play. Keep in mind that my swing speed is probably under 70mph.
    • Day 17 - First round of the year. It took me about 6 holes to remember how to hit off grass. Short game was lacking, but the round could’ve been much worse. It’s nice that my new “bad” is my old “good.”
    • Yes this was what I was thinking you have two golfers same 5 HC same swing speed 110Mph ...one you changed the driver head to a 10yr old model head but the same loft etc the other you changed shaft ...now if its just 10yr old shaft of the same flex weight etc it would be more so the newer head IMHO ..but if the shaft was changed to softer flex lighter than player was use to then the shaft would be the winner IMHO
