I can't say that I like or dislike the actual architect, I can only say I like this example of someone's work or I don't like this work. Plus, I haven't played enough courses to get a good consensus.

A favorite is a local Donald Ross course that has been maintained to as close to original as possible (1919).

Least favorite: I thought the Fazio Course at the Barefoot resort had a few too many bunkers - probably because I was in them more than I cared for . At least many of them were of the waste variety.

Favorites:

MacKenzie - Goes without saying
Billy Bell (jr. and sr.) and George Thomas - The Bells and Thomas have designed some fantastic courses that have stood the test of time, like Riviera, Torrey Pines, Bel Air, LACC, etc.
Tom Doak - MacKenzie reincarnated

Least Fav:
Pete Dye - I like my courses to have their notable features be of the land and look natural, not tricked-up memorials to the decline of the railroad industry

Lucky enough to play a couple of different Donald Ross courses so he is def my favorite. Also like Fazio usually.

Have to agree with Clambake that Pete Dye is one of my least favs.

I also really like Ben Crenshaw (Coore and Crenshaw) designs

I've played a couple Donald Ross courses and loved them all.

www.petershamcc.com (A nice 9-hole public course)
www.whitinsvillegolfclub.net (A really nice 9-hole private course w/ one of the top 100 holes as according to Golf Mag)
www.cohasse.com (Another really nice 9-hole private course)
www.sterlinggolf.com/franklin/index.htm (A nice 18-hole public course which I played after a couple days of terrential downpours so it wasn't in genuine condition, but still it was nice)

I like Ross' designs also. I've played Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, CT http://www.town.groton.ct.us/depts/parksrec/shenny.asp

Really nice muni, lots of fun holes. Great course history here.

Being in Canada - I gotta say Stanley Thompson....he made so many great courses in the early 1900's - For instance St. George's G&CC; which will host the Canadian Open again next year (Number 27 on top 100 courses outside the US)

In the same breath I would include Donald Ross....for the same reasons as Thompson....deceivingly difficult and a joy to play.

Without a doubt my favorite is Donald Ross. Wannamoisett CC, Rhode Island CC, Metacomet CC, Triggs, and CC of New Bedford are a couple of the local ones I have gotten to play of his.

Least Favorite is Geoffrey Cornish. He makes some very bad holes on each and every course he does. The bad part about this is he has designed more courses in New England than anyone else including my home course Crestwood CC. He ruined great Ross courses by adding 9's to such layouts as Fall River CC and Warwick CC. O well.

    • First round at Quail Ridge: 47 + 47 = 94 *Note: It was 25+ mph winds with gust in the 35+ mph. It was also around 58 degrees. I felt like I was out in Oregon. The greens were very firm.  Driver was decent. It didn't cause me an issues.  Irons were the biggest issue. Just low point control was lacking. Mostly on the chunky side. Also, my irons were routinely 20-30 yards shorter than normal. Even on holes with a cross wind, the ball was just dying. We played an extra 9 holes after the first 18, and the wind died down by then. I stepped into a 9 iron, and it came up 15 yards short. I have no clue what is going on. I should not be hitting 9 irons 140 yards when I am hitting my driver 300 to 310 yards.  Warmup didn't give me much confidence. I just kept shanking every other iron shot. I didn't shank an iron during the round. I just felt all out of sorts today. Coordinate felt off.  yea, I have no idea if I am purposely slowing down my swing to feel my downswing piece. Again, I hit a decent 9 iron and lost 15 yards of carry. I hope this is just an off day.
    • Day 565 - 2026-04-19 Wanted to get home to do some spring cleaning type stuff, so I practiced for about seven or eight minutes and got my butt home. Just backswing stuff, mostly, with freezers and a little downswing feel. Liking the new big mirror I have.

    • Day 22: played 18. Shot okay - 80 - but long game was bad. Saved by some good putting and short game.
    • Well that's about the dumbest thing I've read today.
