Right. And Tiger's "misses" aren't nearly as far offline as they might appear on TV.

Exactly, these guys are playing on fairways that are what, 23 yards wide? Many seem to forget that.

So an open clubface is the only cause of a slice? Perhaps at impact it's the primary problem, but lots of things can cause that position.

A large percentage of people that slice do so because they cast or flip, not that hard to fix.

Relative to the swing path, uhh, yes.

I love how people make fixing the slice seem way more complicated than it is. If the clubface is square to the swingpath at impact, you won't slice, end of story. Sure, you'll still pull alot of shots if you're OTT, but work on one thing at a time. Sam Snead always aimed a fair amount to the right beause his shot was a pull, Lee Trevino aimed way left of the target, because he pushed the ball.

On a side note, I play with a kid every once and a while that marvels at how "low" I hit the ball, granted I do hit it lower than the average person, but not that low. I don't have the heart to tell him that I don't hit the ball that low, it's just that he hits it really high because he is adding loft to the club(flipping). He hits his 8 iron about 100 yards long and sky high! My hands lead the clubface more than most people's at impact(my impact position is kinda like Sergio's) and my irons have lower lofts as well.

I really think a lot of slicing and such comes from tension. The golfer is using their arms and hands way too much. Making it especially confusing is a lot of golf advice that describes movements with the arms and wrists, etc but doesn't really say that these things should be passive and they just happen when you swing correctly. With free arms and hands and using the body and shoulders to swing the club, the club squares itself by itself due to the physics of the club.

When your arms and hands feel weightless and free, the slice will go away. But you need to trust it and not get tense, or else you're done.

Also, use a strong grip!

Some people are simply happy with the state of their golf game as it is and don't necessarily want to put in the work to fix their problems. I know plenty of people who only golf occasionally because it's fun to get out and have a hit and have no desire to work on their game. Sure if they hit it straight they'd have more fun but when they weigh up the time and effort it would take to make that happen they don't see it as worth it (even if it is bugger all as you say). I guess the mindset is "If only play every 6 months and it's fun when I do why bother spending money to get lessons".

True that! I still think that anyone can overcome the dreaded slice if they want to put in the work. I've only been playing 8 moinths and can pull it like nobodys business if I want to.

If they put in the work, that's just it.

Too many aren't satisfied if that one range session or lesson doesn't fix it.

I believe Hogan was absolutely correct in his statement that someone of average physical ability can break 80 in 6 months if they put the required work into it. If the game was easy how much fun would it be?

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
