Buying New Irons

Alright ive been using the 695's for a week now.. and i can honestly say it does not fit me.. the ball just seems to lose some OOMPH with these clubs.. its hard to part with them so because they are so beautiful ... nevertheless i was fortunate that rogerdunn has the 90 day satisfaction thing.. so i was looking for any suggestions on new clubs.. i have 1000 dollar instore credit and that can get me most sets so fire away any reccomendations! thanks in advance

personally, i still use the 690cb's and i've also been thinking about buying new irons.

i've heard good things about the mizuno mp-60's.

..... Do some field tests and take some out on some courses ... first, you gotta like the way they look, then you have to like the feel of the club in your hands and the swing motion ....

It's like anything else in life they can look good, but if they're not playing well for you then you need to go to plan "B" ... I played Cleveland TA5's for a few years, they were fitted, they were one of the very first in black matte and they sure were puuurty .. I probably got asked 15 times in 2 years about who, what and where about those clubs ..... the problem was, I didn't play well with them and after awhile I lost confidence and I couldn't keep my score under 90 on any consistent basis ... But before I switched, I played everything on my local track first just to get the feel and touch .... what I didn't do was listen to 15 opinions from 15 different players and sales guys at the local "ball shop" (thats what got me in trouble in the first place) .. Like my instructor said: "unless you can find the exact twin to yourself, then a doorknob has as much credibility.." That all said .... the current owner of my TA5's now has dropped from a 20 handicap to 12 handicap -- that just goes to show "the right club in the right hand works everytime ...."

the mizuno MP-32 and MP-60s are very nice loooking and perform better than they look to me. I think you should go out and try some iron sets on the range though before you just go and buy some irons without knowing how they will perform for you...

demo, demo, demo....Its what works for you. Definitely do your research on cavity backs and blades, and shop for the best price once you find something you like.

Finn hit the nail on the head... I have not been a Callaway person till this year, the Callaway products are nice, Cleveland has always been on the top of my list, quality drivers, wedges and irons(I've used TA5's and TA7's).

Alright ive settled on the mp60's thanks guys! ive still got some money left and i was gonna puirchase a new 3 wood or utility club any suggestions?

I think Taylor Made and Callaway have a special running, purchase a driver and get a free three wood or utility club. They may have something similar if you want to purchase a three wood and get a utility as well. Look into it.

It's probably not the iron itself that is giving you a problem but the stiffnes of the shaft your playing. The projext x shaft is a great one, but the 6.5 flex is for tour players hitting their 5 irons 20 yds. Drop down to at least a 6.0 or even 5.5 and you will love either the 695's or the mp60s. Personally, I have the MP60s in and am switching out my s300s in favor of px 5.5s.

i do hit my 5 iron 200, 4 iron 210, 3 iron 230.... i have no problems with distance. but ii hear titleist clubs usually give less distance. maybe something about the metal or something. Well im such a flake i went out to buy mp60's haha and i came back with the cleveland cg1's black pearl. all i have to say im relieved that i have my old distances back with the cg1's :) thanks guys for your input.

I was the exact same way... I purchased the 695mbs off of tgw.com, and luckily for me they had the playablity offer on them... after trying to adjust they were just a little to tough to get around...

but after some decent research and playing tests I went with the 735cm's, partyly because I have some loyalty to Titleist but I personally love the transition between cavity and muscleback clubs

they have the same classic look... chrome is beautiful but they just have that little bit of forgivness we all want without playing a wide sole shovel...

I decided on the 735s with project x shafts and I'm playing the best golf of my life, last two rounds 74, 76 on an above average track... give them a try

I just bought a set of reg shaft Callaway Great Big Bertha irons with graphite shafts and I really love them. Never thought I'd own a set with graphite but these take alot of the shock of hitting down into the ball away from your hands and that is a plus for me. I can hit down into the ball now and not worry about the feedback the steel shafts gave me in the past. I'm getting 10 more yds out of them also!

sorry to tell you that, but these kind of stories are being told by people, who usually don't hit the sweet spot with their irons. Titleist equipment (in general) is less forgiving - that's why if you don't hit it "on the dime" - you'll see distance loss. If your swing is spot-on - trust me, no distance lost there.

titleist doesn't even venture if forgivness , maybe the 775 could be considered their "easy" club but otherwise they develop those clubs under cobra

Pretty much. My 695MB review stresses this too (should be up today or tomorrow). On their site (in a PDF) they say "0-5 handicap."

I don't know where in California you are but you have some of the best fitting labs in the country in San Diego and Palo Alto. Get fitted by the best rather than all this off the rack guesswork.

well ya i learned my lesson the hard way.. 695's are just not for me.. im confident if i kept em for awhile i could have got better results but.. oh well im happy with my cg1's and they are still the same kind of blade that has good workability. thanks guys for the input.

I am also looking at buying a new sets of irons. Have played both Callaway Fusion and Taylor Made Rac OS. Referred the Taylor Made Rac OS. I am thinking about buying the Titlelist 735CM. Anyone has any advise on how they compare with the other two sets that I have played before?

I also prefer lighter steel shaft - is there any ways and where can i get the Titlelist 735CM fitted with a NS-Pro 850/ 750 gram shaft or a Precision Microlight steel shaft ?
