So Ive decided that 90% of my practice time will be dedicated to 100 yds and in...

You guys were spot on when you said that I should be doing most of my practice like that.

My question is, how do you guys practice the 50-100 yard approach shots. I can practice 45 yarders on the pitching green at the range but anything longer than that I have to use up all my bucket at the actual range....

Do you guys just pick targets 100 yards away and try to hit em?? And do you just estimate the 85 yard marking, 75 yard, 65 yard...??

Sorry if its vague, maybe Im not explaining it right, but how do you guys practice your approach shots...

Oh as for greenside chipping, what do you guys do to practice that? I tend to throw down 5 or 6 balls and chip away, but I'd like a little more structure....

Any thoughts are gladly welcome!

Jim

I practice mostly by playing but on rare occasions, I do get on the course alone and just hit to the green from those distances. I chip about 6 balls to the hole and then try to keep everything to a 1 putt.

I think 90% might be too much. I think it's equally important to hit controlled, full swing 8 & 9 iron for practice - to establish the tempo/rhythm.

But as far as your question - practicing 50 to 100 yard approaches -
I practice this 2 ways.

1. The course I belong to (pay flat fee = free range balls/free golf) has a short-range practice area. No shots over 150 are allowed. I love that little range. Basically the only people that ever use it are the 2 pros, the kids that work there and myself. The short range has distances of 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 marked.

2. Play alone. Play somewhere and at a time where you'll have some room to practice on the course. Get to a hole late in the round and hit 10 balls from inside 100. Please repair all pitch marks.

Oh yeah, I also once in awhile goto a park that's rarely used and just hit my wedges. Usually use my GPS to measure out some distances and mark them with towels.

It is nice to see that some of you go out onto the course and practice hitting toward the green. The range just doesn't have the same feel. Yesterday I did this with my son. We went out about 50 yards from the green and he just practiced pitching it onto the green.

my shortgame is all feel based so I need to make sure I take my time picturing the trajectory. So, I just pick a ball out there that someone shanked or duffed and chip to that, and then change it up.

Several times this summer I have gone to my course's range about 1.5 hour before dark. After I hit my range balls, if nobody else is there hitting, I just walk out onto the range and hit to the target greens till I can't see anymore with my 50 and 56. I dont take my rangefinder out there, just walk up to a ball, judge the distance and hit it. My 6 year old likes to do this as well.

    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
