The announcers are inconsistent with this. Most of the time they will declare a pin location relative to the fairway (looking at the flag from the fairway). Every now (when the players are chipping or pitching) they will name the location relative to the camera looking from the green down to the fairway.

Is there a correct way to name a pin location?

I always qualify a pin's location relative to looking at the green from the fairway.

What do you mean? Yards on? "Back left pin"? What specifically?

"left pin" vs "right pin". Looking at the flag from the fairway is how I qualify a pin's location. Just as calling the left fielder in baseball relative to home plate.

Every now and then, the announcers will reverse this when the camera angle is from behind the green. They'll say "he's going for this left pin", when the flag is to the right of the player in fairway. I noticed this on today's web cast of the PGA. Maybe, the announcers were just confused, but they did this two or three times.

"Left" and "right" are only valid when used in reference to the normal direction of play. If those announcers are doing anything different, then they need to go back to announcing school.
