It's easy for me to find the putter head I like, which I've already done. no insert. But how do I find out which neck I like? Is it that important? I've tried a lot, but can't find the differences. Thanks for the advice

  1. How much "toe-hang" do you want?
  2. How much offset do you want?
  3. What fits your eye?

If you want a face-balanced putter that many "straight-back-straight-through" strokers use then you want one with little to no toe hang or toe flow.

If you have an arcing type stroke then you may want more toe hang/toe flow.

The neck styles are a variable....although not the only variable....in determining this.

Plumbers necks and mid-slants will give you more offset than many double bend shaft/neck junctions.

I like the mid-slant style necks over the plumbers necks. This is just a personal thing. Sometimes my stroke varies and the longnecks or doublebends seem to work best. I rotate putters around every couple of months...if I get "stale" with one. I'm not saying this is advisable....or even remotely smart....but it works for me.

Don't be scared to borrow your buddie's wands for a few minutes and roll a few. Try many different styles and you'll find something that jumps out at you.

Good luck. There are a few basic categories....find the one overall type that you like and then dig into the numerous models within that type to find your specific model.

I think the neck is very much a personal thing, it's what suits your eye as much if not more, than performance. Personally, I like the plumbers neck, I like to "see" my hands even with the ball when I putt. But a lot of people want their hand behind the ball at impact and address, so they go with a straight neck or a center shafted putter.

IMHO, choice what ever neck lets you setup square to your intended line of the putt and lets you contact the ball square to your intended line of the putt.

I think the most determinate factor is what style of putter you are. If you know that you've solved the biggest equation and you cut the neck options in half. Everything after that would just be personal preference. Arc putters prefer toe hang, and those putters are ususally off-set necks. Face balanced putters usually have less offset, and youll get alot of double bends and strait shafts with those.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
