I was in Golf Galaxy today, and they have a set of Maltby MHS hybrids on sale 75% off.

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with them. Granted at 75% off, a set of fitted clubs for $100 isn't much to lose but then I don't have much to begin with. Are they worth it?

did you test him them? What do you think? Maltby makes good clubs, if you like them, then I am sure they are fine.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I had them last year. They are very hot off the face.. and very forgiving.
I didn't care too much for the really wide soles though..
The long blade length of the irons in that set make them really forgiving.. you will not be able to tell at all on any toe hits.. unless you are out toward the extreme end of the toe..
The 20* and 23* hybrid heads in that set are hot faced, just as the irons.. They put off a "tink" sound when struck.. If you have a solid swing.... be prepared for over 200 yards off of the 20* hybrid.

They are a really nice playing/looking set, if you can get past the wide soles..

I hit the 6-iron a few times and I liked the way it felt, but it's kind of hard to tell off from the mats.

I like the look of the club, and I've heard of Maltby clubs. I just wanted to see if anyone here had played them. I currently play a set of 12-year old King Snakes (King Cobra clones). These clubs were put together for me by an amateur club maker but I'm not sure the fit is right.

On the rare occasion that I hit my current clubs correctly they feel good and I get good distance. Will the Maltby clubs be an upgrade or downgrade?

    • That's interesting. I think it depends on which arm you use to lean the shaft forward.  If you predominantly use your leading (left) arm to "pull" the shaft forward (do this by putting your left wrist into flexion), then the face appears to be closed.  Instead, if you use your trailing (right arm) to "push" the shaft forward (do this by supinating your right forearm), then the face does appear open.
    • For many, that will open the face. So, no. It's not universally true.
    • Day 581 - 2026-05-05 Spent an interesting 90 minutes on GEARS Hybrid. Prioritization is important.
    • Day 255 5-5 Getting arm off chest in backswing and downswing. Starting to make a bit of progress. Recorded  and hit foam balls.
    • Day 2, May 5 2026.  I went to putt today;  my usual make-24 drill.  Scored a 35 from 4' and 58 from 6'.   Those scores both beat the bogey player baseline;  I wish I had numbers for something between a scratch golfer and a 90-golfer available for me (I might be able to infer them from ShotScope?).   Either way, I'm happy with that performance.  From 4', 3 coins came up on the second pass and another 3 on the third.  One of these days I might make 12 in a row, which is something I'd like to see 🙂
