Hello! My name is Matt. I'm in the Air Force, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. I just turned 31 years old last week. I have never ever had an interest in golf until recently. I was in Oklahoma City last week doing some flight simulator training with my boss, a Lt. Colonel. He pressured me into going golfing with him. I told him that I'd rather sit in my hotel room and punch myself in the face, but he kept pressuring me all week. Finally, I caved in and went. Let me tell you, I really SUCK at golf, but I was hooked after that first game. I had a blast. This game is really addictive! So much so, that I went out and bought my first set of clubs tonight. I am back in Alaska now, and bought my clubs at Sports Authority. I bought some Tommy Armour Diamond Scot clubs. I was interested in the Royal Scot clubs since they were only $300 and had good reviews. But they were out of them and the manager sold me the Diamond Scot clubs for the same price as the Royal's. I haven't tried them out yet, but I'm going to head out to the driving range after work tomorrow. Has this happened to anybody else?

Congrats on the new set. I learned to play when I was in the AF. 83-87 Started before then but didn't really get into it much till playing with freinds in the AF. My barracks was right next to the base course. Use to go out late in the evening and find balls. Hardly had the money to buy them myself. The good ol days!! Enjoy your new clubs!!

KC10,

Welcome to the club. I'm a former Marine, and have always enjoyed military golf courses.

Some words of advice...

Take Lessons First!

I was a self-taught golfer, starting at age 13, and spent my adult years trying to unlearn bad swing habits. I made a conscious effort to build a consistent swing a couple of years ago, and it's starting to come together.

Your basic swing is pretty well set by the time you play your sixth round of golf. So, take some lessons and get the basics down at the beginning. To help you along, I would recommend Ben Hogan's classic 1957 book, Five Lessons: The Fundamentals of Modern Golf. Everyone is rediscovering it in the 21st Century.

By the way, the first golfer in my extended family was my Aunt Miriam, a career USAF nurse. She won the base women's club championship several time during her travels.

Semper fi!

Focus, connect and follow through!

I can vouch for you learning a lot more from a pro in 20 minutes than you would playing loads of rounds on your own :)

I've only recently started playing properly. I'm fairly happy with my short game because I played a lot of pitch and putts in my early teens, then nothing for close to 15 years! I was at the range one evening and the local pro came over and started chatting to us. He basically ended up giving me and my dad a free 20 minute lesson and I instantly noticed much better results from actually swinging properly (ie from the body instead of the arms).

Thanks for the advice! I was out at the range today, trying out my new clubs. I'm pretty impressed with them. I definitely could use some lessons though. I'm hooking up with the ball pretty much every time, but I'm just not consistent in how far I'm hitting the ball, or in which direction. HA! If I'm not trying to hit the ball as hard as I can, I can be a little more consistent. I did hit a few with full retard strength and knocked a couple out to 250 yards! :D

Good deal.

My first set was a set of Tommy Armour copies. I loved those sticks. There is something magical about your first set.

Definitely get a lesson or two to get your swing started off right. You can really screw things up by repeating bad moves at this point. One or two 30 minute lessons can make a difference that you'll thank yourself years later for.....trust me.

Enjoy the game.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
