This is something that I'm trying to figure out. I never really had a lesson or anything in spinning the ball. I just try to read as much as possible. I usually go by..a lower flight would make the ball bite quicker as compared to a higher soft landing ball that'll just release. My shots the past few weeks have done anything from hit once and then check up..to hit once then spin back a couple feet leaving a harder putt or have even spun off the green. So my question is...for those that spin it...how do you judge it and control it better?

Lets say I'm hitting a PW, which I carry 135, which in turn means it will spin back a yard or so. to make it hit bounce and stop I will hit a partial knock down, controlling the trajectory, and keeping it around 3/4 height. to get the same club to hit and run out about 15 feet i have to hit it really low.

These things work with every club but slightly different the longer the club you are using. On a LW or SW to get it to spin like crazy, (Kinda fun but not a scoring shot) put the ball in the middle of your stance, on the take away (keep it pretty short) get your clubface wide open and just swing through it aggressively.

I have noticed a similar problem myself this year. For me, it is a combination of hard, zoysia fairways, great greens, and a better swing that makes better contact with the ball. There are certain shots that if I want to hit them, I know I have to play 3-4 yards further than I would to account for the spin. Sometimes it works out great, and other times a ball bounces right next to the hole and comes back 10-12 feet.

One thing I do if I think a shot will give me too much spin, say a wedge from 120 or so with no room behind the hole to land, I will just use one more club, choke down and take a 3/4 swing. By using more club and not swinging as hard, I won't produce an excessive amount of spin and the ball should land and stay within 3-4 of where it hit.

There may be other ways to do it, but I don't know them. I'm pretty pleased I have one method to do, so I will worry about others later in life.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

That is basically how all of the pros and college players I know do it. I'm starting to work on choking down n stuff.

I am new to the forum, but certainly not new to golf! Anyways I agree with the previous posts, in that taking more club and swinging smoother with reduce the amount of spin that you put on the ball. In addition to this, you may want to think about switching to a slightly harder ball, I went from the ProV1 to the ProV1X and saw some dramatic changes. To keep a long story short, choke down and swing softly to keep the ball from backing off of the green.

Thanks something new to work on,

Slightly open, find something that feels comfy, all the best players hit a little push all the time to control the shot better.

I agree. I usually play with the harder ball (Tour ix) now to make it not spin back so much, but if I'm playing on baked hard greens I go with the softer ball (Tour i)

I played 9 holes yesterday and shot a 40. 4 bogeys 5 pars. The greens were softer than usually but still pretty firm. I had 3 nice check-ups. 2 came back a foot and 1 stopped. I still need to practice but I'm getten there.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
