... one word, awesome. seriously. this place is great! it's not the size on the inside as the PGA superstore that's in Plano, but they've got pretty much anything you'll need with regards to accessories. IMO, the PGA stores are a bit, nay a huge overkill. The thing that's so great about the GS store is it's got a range. Yes, a full size golf range connected to the store.

So, I go in, and tell one of the employees inside about wanting to hit the G15 on the simulator. He looks at me and says, ''why'd you want to do that? you just go out back and tell them you want to hit it and you can take it to the range.'' So, not quite knowing what to expect, I arrive to this small hut with every driver known to man behind a bar on a rack spanning the length of the wall. I say I want to hit the G15 stiff 9.0*, he takes my license and hands me a ticket, worth 25 free range balls. I hit it, and he's watching me analyzing my swing and such, because he happens to be a PGA pro. as well. Then he hands me the new Titleist for me to hit along with more balls. My gf had to drag me from this place. It's heaven on earth. If you're ever in Austin, this place is a must see tourist attraction.

Yep, I went by earlier this week and was just messing around with hitting some irons on the simulator. One of the employees stopped by and asked if I wanted to use the range instead. Of course I said yes and picked up the G15s, the Burners and the Cleveland Launcher. They really take care of you there.

I don't have anything against golfsmith. I think it's a great store.... and maybe it's just because I go there often enough to take things for granted......... but the OPs post seems to me to be a bit exaggerated.

Then again, in that instance it seems the employee went above and beyond what I'd call the norm. Maybe I should go check it out again... When I was looking for new irons, they really would urge me to go get a proper feel out on the range -- but they didn't even have the Tour Preferreds to hit at the time and they weren't even THAT new. I had to settle for the r7 TPs when demo-ing.

The fact that there's a grass/mat range out back is definitely something I'm thankful for though.

But it's also a big letdown that a lot of times things I want are out of stock.... theres the huge freakin warehouse in the back ALSO!!! But communication between that store and the warehouse leaves something to be desired.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
