Hi, I'm interested in getting a new set of irons for tournament play. I do not have much money to spend especially because I want to get my new set fitted and that'll cost some money. So I'm looking on ebay for some second hand, slightly older models of clubs. For my currently about 17 handicap, I feel like I can easily improve my game pretty quickly as I have been working on a better swing plane with my instructor for a while and I have it down, its just a matter of pulling everything else together. So, right now I have a RAC OS2 and I feel like its just too beginner-ish. The soles are very wide and there is plenty of offset. I feel like although they are fairly new clubs, I can do just as well or better with more skill needed clubs. I have read about last year's titleist 704 mentioned in another post. But do you find that going from teh RAC OS 2 easiness of hitting to titleist 704 my hurt my game than help. I think going from the RAC's to teh 804 wouldnt be too different, so I think the 704 would be a good choice. Unless theres a better set suited for me, I think I would stick to the prestigious titleist name, I just think of pros and good players when I think of titleist so I am leaning towards it. Can anyone recommend these or recommend maybe a better set for me that can help me as i go from around a 17 to single digit handipap at a good price? Thanks so much.

I am also a 17 handicap working to improve my game. For the last four years, I played with a set of Callaway Hawkeye VFT irons. Those irons are among the easiest to hit, but lack much feel and are HUGE. In an effort to find what I felt would be a more appropriate set for my lot in life, I chose the Titleist 775CBs. They are what is known as a progressive set; i.e., larger long irons, more compact short irons with less offset. There is an excellent review of these irons on this website in the "Review" section. I immodestly added some of my thoughts to those of the reviewers. I recently saw a set on eBay selling for $619 ( 4-gw, steel shaft ). I think the irons are very sweet: slimmer, more compact than other game improvement irons, but nonetheless forgiving as well as offering good feedback on mishits. I also like the standard Nippon steel shafts, although you can get other shafts for these irons. The 704s you mentioned are more compact than the 775s, offering less forgiveness, although I'm sure they are superb. If you are interested in Titleist irons, I would suggest you give the 775s a try. They might make a good transition from the larger TaylorMade OS clubs. I would strongly suggest you get fitted by a pro. Best of luck to you in your search.
