Finally managed to coordinate schedules with my pro, and got swing video of wedge and iron shots from front and back. Didn't get driver as my back started barking at me again and we packed it in.

Few things were surprising, some not so much.

Bad
* Too close to the ball, no room for arms to work.
* Aiming about 20 yards left of the target every time.
* Ball a bit too far back in stance.
* Overswing past parallel, making arm angles break down in the process.
* Hip slide forward. Between that and starting the ball too far back, I'm amazed I even hit the thing.
* Slight elbow bend at impact.
* MONSTOROUS chicken wing. No release whatsoever. Looks to be how I hurt my back in the first place. Hell, I almost have a -double- chicken wing.

Good
* Hands in front of the ball at impact.
* "Could take a picture of my grip to refer to in textbooks".
* Perfect takeaway, solid backswing 'til the top.
* Good job maintaining my angle on the downswing... Well, obviously -- There's no release. *laugh*
* Identical wedge and iron swings.

-----------------

So, at present I'm trying to address the Dreaded Chicken Wing issue and get a feel for releasing the club through impact. Going to be a while before I'm taking full swings again, but I'm trying a few drills only going back to about the 'Y' position.

Having a little trouble getting a feel for the proper release. It almost feels like I'm ducking my head under (Picture Gulbis) when I turn my shoulders to get into the proper position.

Feeling a bit better with the hips -- I changed my focus from turning the hips themselves to shooting my rear leg/knee toward the target (Which naturally turns the hips and seems to result in better balance).

Any other tips/drills to help work on the above flaws?

You could try the glove under your right armpit to help stop the chickenwing,
great to hear your not firing the right hip on the downswing, what your doing now sounds good.Feel on the downswing that your right shoulder is going under your left, and remember, swing to fast you lose distance and accuracy.Focus on solid contact which will help tempo.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
