Well here it goes I'm just a beginner however I go out to practice about 4 to 5 a week spending about 1 to 3 hour eveything I go out! The problem is that I usaually hit about 80 to 85% of every shot solid! the problem happen when I go to the golf course I'm having a lots of trouble hitting on the fareways!! Now I'm noticing how most pros alway take a divot so I went out to practice yesterday and declared never to hit off the mats unless I just practicing distance! When I spoke to my friend who played pro he said you not surpose to try to divot only a solid shot creates a divot! What the deal? I did notice yesterday the closer I kept the iron to the swing path and my head down he shot explodes! and created a divot! Are you surpose to strike the ball in order to create a divot one person I know who shoots in the 80 he told he always pushes to create a divot!! could anybody shead some light on this subjest!!!!

Once you know how to do it is actually fairly easy to take a divot, assuming you have a proper weight shift. I agree that using the divot as a way to evaluate the shot makes sense. The depth and direction gives you some information about your contact. As a goal though it isn't that important. Jack Nicklaus in his prime, took very shallow divots and almost no divot on his 1-3 irons. Tiger has shallowed out his wedge swing and takes a much smaller divot than he did several years ago. Check out the old posts on spin. If you strike a shot well enough to impart proper spin, you probably will take a divot.

What he has said is very true. When you descend down into the ball and you are moving your hips toward the target, you will contact the ball with a downward stroke and take a divot in front of the lie. The ball will have more backspin than you think and will create more joy for you on the course.

Golf is not a game, it's a way of life!

    • Day 14:  I hit a bucket with my 7i and driver, didn’t hit my 7 well but my driver was good.  Played my first “real” 9 holes.  Sure, I had a few mulligans but I kept score.  Lost two balls in the water.  Had to chip from the edge of the water and did pretty good, just rolled too far past the hole.  Par was 33 and I wasn’t double but  I was closer to it than I would have liked.  I had a bogey on 9 so that ended it on a sweet note for me.
    • Day 134 - Had a tournament today, played poorly. Same as yesterday where the driving was great, but the second shots were awful. Need to dial that in tomorrow so I don’t finish DFL.
    • Day 313: range session. Worked on my feel for getting my hips more open/rotated at impact. Then did a stack session.
