ah well that explains it... Its broken all the time in team events.

it is indeed.

Apparently, and I must be naive for only recently discovering this, but people are breaking rules so carelessly in their casual rounds that many of the rules themselves cease to exist.

I think the thing that is most annoying about these guys is that Iacas gave them a subtle hint and they were too obtuse to get the message and knock it off. Instead, they adopted the passive aggressive attiitude, and acted as if it was his problem. Not cool.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Iacas, I dont get it, were the players lining up each others putting lines by standing there??

BTW, Iacas, I sent you a PM a few days ago, did you get it?[/QUOTE]

Yes, I got it - I greatly prefer email. And they were standing on the line while the stroke was being made.
Yeah do you mean standing behind the hole to show them where to putt to, or standing behind the putter as they putt towards the opposite direction.

The latter. The order was hole-player-partner. Again, 14-2.

What he means is other player standing directly behind or in front of someone putting so they can clearly see how the ball rolls to the hole. They get a free read.

Yep.

Oh gotcha, yeah I mean we do that occasionally in casual play, but I could see how in competitive play that could be a round changer.

It's not against the rules if it's an opponent or fellow competitor. It violates etiquette (if you're close, particularly), but it's not against the rules for an opponent to stand behind your ball on your line while you putt.

Did you show them the rule?

Wasn't worth it for the many reasons I already laid out. Primarily because I knew the head pro wouldn't back me up and he'd just say something like "it's just a scramble, who cares?"

And won $54 doing it. They came in third. I had told my friend/partner Dan that we had an obligation to protect the rest of the field, but he said "everyone cheats in these things, they always do, but that doesn't mean we have to." So that's the approach we took. Do I feel a bit guilty? Maybe... I don't know what you'd call it at this point. I do know I'm going to find a way to bring it up at some point.

Yeah, I don't think I have ever seen a scramble where the playing partners do not stand behind the guy doing the putting. But where I play, scrambles are not considered serious events and it is just accepted.

Yeah, and that's a big part of the reason why I didn't push the issue. I really don't care about $27 or whatever, but I do care about my own integrity, so

I don't break the rules. Enforcing them on others in hit-and-giggle events is a grey area. But in the end, it would be better if everyone simply knew and followed the rules.

I agree, when playing a best-ball type of event, then call a penalty on him. You already warned him once. But, I disagree with your interpretation of the rule in relation to a 'scramble' event. The playing partner isn't standing on his partner's line of putt, he is STANDING ON HIS LINE OF PUTT! In a scramble, you each hit from the SAME SPOT, that's why it's accepted that you can (read MUST, to be competitive) stand on his line of putt. It's your line of putt, you are putting from the same spot.

No, that's not the way the rules work. He's putting at the time, it's the line of his putt. That's why "scrambles" that are run by competent people and want to allow this specifically waive that rule. They're not playing "golf" at that point but a scramble isn't golf to begin with.
