I am 17 and can only hit my driver about 180-190. I got a old king cobra 10.5. I am going to be looking to buy a new driver very soon. And I was wondering would I be better off with a Senior flex shaft? or should I stick to regular

Thanks

are you only hitting 180-190 because thats all the power you can get? or is it because of mishits? i would stick to a regular shaft if its a power issue. im using a 975jvs 10.5* and i carry about 260. i still use regular flex shaft because my swing speed was only 90-95 the last i checked. i'm not really sure what the difference is between senior flex and regular.. so yeah. im sure you'll get much more help from the others on this forum :]

thats all i can get out of my swing

the shaft on my driver right now is steel, maybe thats one reason I am just curious because according to this its says i should use a senior flex : http://www.customgolfsales.com/flexpop.htm

im pretty sure as you play more you'll develop more power. you're still young. i would get a regular shaft and just try to get used to it. to me its the same thing as buying mens clubs and just growing into them.

I suggest saving your money. If you are a 32 handicap, forget the driver for a while. Tee off with a 3 or 5 wood. I played for two years at an 11-12 index without a driver in the bag. I am a 6.4 now and probably only "need" the driver four or five holes a round.

Hone your swing with shorter more lofted clubs that you can hit better. Once you get some "game" then spend the money and time to add a driver to your bag.

A driver at your level will frustrate you and hurt your wallet. If you get where you can hit 60-70% of fairways with a 3-wood at 200+ yds. then start to demo drivers to find one that suits you... and take your time about it... demo lots of them. When you do get a driver, spend some money and get a good one. Cheap drivers, even if you can hit them well, will not give you the desired performance.

Sounds like you are having a problem with club head speed or casting from the top. Are you slicing the ball or hitting it straight? At your age, you should have much greater clubhead speed than that. I hate to give you advice without seeing you swing and therefore I can't advise you on shaft stiffness etc. Need more info from you!

Yeah, I agree with previous posters about just ditching the driver for now. Chances are, you probably hit your three wood farther anyway.

Groove a swing with the easier-to-hit clubs in your bag. The driver will still be there to frustrate you for years to come. Trust me.

It still does with me ragontona. Have yet to go more than a month without struggling with the driver. Right now, I have a great feel with the 3 wood and don't feel like I'm losing much distance and can control it real well.

Just stick with a 3 wood for now. You don't have to hit the big dog...

It would be helpful to know how far you hit your middle, short irons. If you hit those longer it probably is a swing issue you will work out in time or with a pro. For example seniors often carry a five iron about 140 yards. If you carry it 150, regular. My swing speed is only 85-87 MPH with the driver and I can hit it up to 235 carry + roll. I can hit my 4 wood up to 210 total distance. As you learn to use your legs and body better you will hit it farther. Most new golfers try to use their arms as a main power source, watch pros on TV and how they use their legs and body insead of arms.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
