I've been playing skins matches (much like match play) with one other person but tomorrow we got a foursome together and were going to play $1 per hole skins. How would you work it if say 3 people tie a hole or any other situation when more than 1 person has the best score, would you just split the 4th players dollar or would no one win?

Thanks and sorry if this is a noob question

couple ways ... you can play 2v2 best team score wins

OR

everyone puts a dollar down per hole and the winner of the hole takes all

If nobody is an outright winner, I'd push the pot over to the next hole. You could also just count skins (outright victories) and at the end of the round, divide the pot by the number of skins and distrbute the cash that way.

BTW, are you doing handicapped skins or straight-up?

A skin is just the lowest score on a hole. If 4 people are playing then the lowest score gets paid. If they tie you have two options. One, forget about hole, nobody won. Two, carry over the money until someone wins. If holes 2,3,4, are tied and then there is a skin comes on hole 5, that person would win the skin money from the 4 holes.

Most of the skin games I have played are pretty simple. You win a skin, everyone give you the predetermined amount with no carry overs. Or as Fat Slice mentioned, you can put all the money together in a pot and divide that by the number of skins, and that is what each skin pays out. You can do carry overs with this one, but it doesn't work out as well. The pot skin game is better played with a bunch of players.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

The way we usually play 4 man skins is 'two tie - all tie.' In other words, if no outright winner, the skin carries over to the next hole.

I like the idea of the "pot" of upfront money everyone puts in then whoever gets the skins divides it up as outright winners no carry overs. Thats a new one.

The carry over could mean that if we tie every hole, but then someone eagles #18 then they win it all lol, I guess the pot idea would mean the same thing now that I think about it, except the pot idea wouldn't make such a big deal if someone won ONE hole that had 6 carry overs, then everyone else won a hole, that one guy would get a lot bigger cut even though he won 1 so the pot idea makes better sense except the carry over idea adds more suspense.

Its a toss up, I guess we'll vote.

thats how i do it.my foursome consists of 2 low cappers 1 middle capper and one high capper.this version allows the 2 low cappers to not dominate so if the high capper has 1 good hole after 3 carry overs he won 4 skins.this has happened to me missed a 5 footer to tie

This way is more common with a group of people (more than one foursome) and usually the skin pot is split evenly (no "carryovers" are considered). But you can really do it anyway you want.

I'll only play skins if the four of us are similar handicaps and then we'll play off "scratch"...
Really frustrating when 3 of you have been battling it out for 5 or 6 holes, halving them left, right and centre and then the 24 handicapper steps in and pinches them all courtesy of a shot he's taking off of you on a par 3.

We usually play 1 skin for par 2 for birdie 3 for eagles, one tie all tie with par or better it carries over (if its a par then 1 carries over a birdie 2 etc) otherwise its a wash. At the end of the round you pay out the number of corresponding skins for the value you gave the skin (usual value of our skins is $10). IE. Player A. has 10 skins Player B. 5 skins Player C. 3 and Player D. 0. In this scenario player A is owed 5 from B, 7 from C and 10 from D. Player B gets 2 from C and 5 from D. C gets 3 from D. Basically you keep score of how many skins each person has and at the end of the round you cancel out and pay the difference.
Probably didn't make sense but I gave it a fair try.

The way we usually play is all four put in $5, each hole is worth $1 with 9 and 18 worth $2. Holes carry over and no handicap, we all have very similar handicaps and any one of us is capable of a birdie or a snowman.

We haven't done this for years however, turned out no one really won or lost any money and it just became more of a bother.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

1,1,1 or 2,2,2

Each birdie is a dollar regardless if its tied or not
skins are a dollar each (no carry over)
closest to the pin is dollar (carry over if no one hits a green, 3 putt loses it)

used to use the same format with 2,2,2 but some people got tired of it and started doing 1,1,1 after they were losing

Simple skins for different handicaps. Lowest handicap gets 0 strokes and every body plays off him. If the low handicap was a 10 and the others were 15, 19, and 23; the 10 would get 0 strokes, the 15 would get 5, the 19 would get 9 and the 23 would get strokes on the 13 hardest holes.

Complex skins for different handicaps. Everybody gets their full handicap and the net score is compared on each hole - this one is difficult to compute, but thats what the guys I play with want to play.

I think the easiest way is for each player to put in the determined amount into the pot before play (usually $5 or $10).

If you're a group of really good golfers, you could say anything better than a par gets a skin, i.e., birdie, eagle, etc. If two players tie, then everyone ties.

If you're a group of golfers with less skill who aren't likely to make many birdies, just play it as the best score on the hole gets the skin. Still the same rules with two tie, all tie.

At the end of the round, count up everyone's skins minus the holes in which there were ties and split the money evenly for each skin.

Here is a great skins game... Skin validations... If someone gets a skin on a hole he must validate it the next hole or no skin. He validates by tying the best score on the next hole... You can use any dollar amount for each skin but they are carried over. I won a skin one day because I birdied 18 (best score on the final hole gets the skin without validating) and won all 18 skins... A good payday...

So in that game, the player that the wins the skin on say, hole 2 with a birdie (4). He must score a 4 on the next hole to get the skin? Or he must simply match or beat the best score on hole three to get the skin?

As others have said, everyone put down a dollar per hole and if people tie then pot gets pushed over the the next hole. If however, you are playing handicaps then the only thing that would change is who would win each depending on if strokes are given on that particular hole.

This is how I usually do it. basically its $18 divided by the total number of skins. Then multiply that number for each players skin and thats how much they get. I played in a 3 on 3 skins match two weeks ago and we didnt handicap it.....lets say I played the round of my life and my teammates and I had to shell out $5 each. I would say thats pretty good considering two guys on the other team are 7 handicaps.
