I am considering dropping my 3 and 4 irons and replacing them with a 23* hybrid to fill the gap between my 5w and 5i. I simply cannot hit those clubs consistently while on the course, and almost never use them except for the occasional long, low shot under the trees or something, a shot which I could still do with a hybrid slightly delofted and further back in my stance. I also am not consistent enough at those distances to where it really matters that I have a tighter gap of clubs there. I think I would rather have extra wedges in my bag.

I am considering changing my bag to this:

1....Driver
2....15.....3w
3....18.....5w
4....23.....H
5....27.....5i
6....30.....6i
7....33.5...7i
8....37.....8i
9....41.....9i
10...45.....PW
11...52.....GW
12...56.....SW
13...60.....LW
14...Putter

My current 3i-PW are all Cleveland CG gold. I plan to keep the PW. I currently do not have 52 or 60 degree wedges and have been playing just a 56* wedge for the past year and feel I am ready to fill the gap and go higher. What do you guys think?

There may be a yardage gap between your 4h and 5i. Even though the loft of a 4h and 4i may be the same, the clubhead design and longer shaft of the hybrid should see it go further than the 4i, maybe further than a 3i!

You still have 7 deg between your PW and 52 deg, which is quite a big gap compared to the rest of your wedges. To simplify your short game, you could just go PW-50-56 or if you still want to carry 4 wedges maybe PW-50-54-58, at least these gaps are a bit more consistent.

When looking at your club set up, the actual distance you hit each club is far more important than the actual loft of the clubs. Once you start mixing different club types (iron, hybrid, wedge) clubs from different manufacturers with different shaft materials, you're probably not going to get consistent yardage gaps on the course, even though the loft of the club says you will.

If you are serious about this project, you should find a decent club fitter with a launch monitor, who will offer a service which allows you to hit each club in your bag and determine where your yardage gaps are. He'll then be able to advise you the best club selection for closing those gaps up.

Other folks may have some different inputs, but that's my 0.02 worth.

I game virtually the same set-up, except I have a 3 hybrid and no 5 wood. I found that the hybrids are much more "confidence inspiring" than my 3 & 4 irons were.

The 23 degree is my favorite between my two (23 & 20 degree). I game it about the same distance as I used to hit a well struck 4 iron. I really like having 4 wedges. PW and SW(54 deg) are the workhorses however the UW(50 deg) is my 100yd stick. The LW (58) really comes in handy when I've short-sided myself or when I have a bunker shot to a tight pin.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
