I talked to the guys at Golfsmith but I think you guys would know better so I figured I'd ask here.

Of the two irons, the Nike CCI forged and the Mizuno MP57, which will be more forgiving when missed a little?

Or are they both about the same on the forgiveness level?

Thanks!

Jim

I don't equate either of these with the term "forgiveness".

Really nice sticks, though...especially the Mizuno irons.

ya know, when I demoed them it was one of those days where I couldnt mis hit if I tried. I was in the zone, you know the feeling, it was on mats as well so that def helps...

So when both were hit sweet, they both felt really really nice, just dont know how those mis hits feel..... If I hit it a little off center, are they about the same forgiveness wise?

I would imagine they are but who knows!

Thanks Dub

I haven't hit any Nike, and just a couple of Mizuno clubs. So, this info all comes from club designer and historian Ralph Maltby. He invented the Malty Playability Factor to rate clubheads on user-friendliness. He came up with six categories from Classic (really challenging to hit) to Ultra Game Improvement (very easy to hit).

* An MP57 (2007) model has MPF = 411, or Conventional.
* A Nike (2008) CCI Forged has MPF = 365, or Classic.

It's probably better to say that the MP57 is less unforgiving than the CCI.

-------------
Note that the MPF only takes into account clubhead design. As Maltby himself cautions, it says nothing about the shaft being used, or type of ball. But, it's a starting point to analyze clubs.

You might be able to find out more if you hunt around in Maltby's site:

Thanks tiger, I was checking that out a couple hours ago actually, but my question is this....

The new MP58 is supposed to be the most forgiving MP iron theyve ever made, doesnt it look quite a bit like the CCI??

I was leaning toward CCI, now with those numbers I just dont know....... worries me a bit, even though I hit them well, on mats at least.

Thanks

I know but I think I like both equally right now

If I was hitting on mats very well, would that translate well to hitting on actual turf? Or will I be in for a surprise?

There is much less offset in the CCI forged set vs the MP57....

What does that mean other than easier workability with the CCI's?

Thanks!

Correction:

Lowest MPF category is Player's Classic (MPF = 0-250), which is one below and more challenging than Classic. (Some irons from 1950s and before actually had negative MPF ratings).

It doesn't influence previous analysis, however.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, wouldn't the MPF numbers mean that the CCI's are LESS forgiving having a lower number?

the advantage of less offset is that they're easier to work. offset allow golfers to square the face more easily. a club with less offset will tend to go right a little more than one with more offset. i can give you a real life example, about two weeks ago i hit the titleist AP2s. with my game improvement irons i am drawing the ball when i want to hit it straight but as soon as i tried the AP2s i was hitting it straight and sometimes a little fade. that is because the AP2s have much lower offset than my irons.
Between the two clubs, i would go for the mizunos. You can find a very good review here: http://thesandtrap.com/clubs/mizuno_mp-57_irons_review .
you can find a review of the cci forged irons here: http://thesandtrap.com/clubs/nike_cc...y_irons_review
The review i found here on the AP2s really helped so i hope this will help you pick the best club for your game

I own a set of cci forged and find them quite easy to hit, considering they are a bladey looking club. When i went to the range fitting centre i asked to try mostly cavities, but ended up with these because of a better trajectory, also they didnt seem to be any harder to hit than the cavity backs.
Also it was interesting to see these clubs were used to win 2 majors this year,Cink and glover. as this model is probably 2 or 3 years old, these guys have the choice of all the latest gear and keeping using this model!

TempoIsKey,

I said the MP57 is "less un forgiving" than the CCI. I meant to say that neither one ranks that high if you want forgiveness. Didn't mean to be confusing.

The CCI ratings came from a 2008 Maltby supplement. I had to do a search for

CCI Forged on his website, and found this e-mail response ... __________________ RE: MPF Iron Ratings for 2008 (Updated) Posted by Ralph Maltby M45, The Nike CCi Forged is 365 points and in the Classic playability category. The cg is .163" rearward of face center or well back into the heel. The vertical cg isn't bad at .747" but the "C"ension is only 1.046". __________________ The playability difference between the two isn't much, from a practical standpoint. Also, MP57 just barely made it into the Conventional category. Maltby would probably tell you to go with the set which you liked best, felt most comfortable with. Maltby does respond to e-mails. If you have a question on particular clubs, ask him.
