Does anyone know any good clubfitters in the NYC area? I'm specifically looking for a golf pro that also does fittings or someone who specifically specialized in just fittings. I ask because I've seen the operation that places like golfsmith and world of golf have and it seems like they only have salesmen doing the fitting who dont really go through the whole process for the sake of just wanting to make a sale or because they aren't fully educated on the process.

For example, my friend bought a set of mizuno's from the world of golf in manhattan and he asked if he needed stiff flex or regular flex - the sales guy told him "well you seem like you are serious about the sport you should go with stiff flex" - I know this is not a correct way to fit someone - from what I've read they are supposed to clock your swing speed and the tempo of your swing make a determination off of that.

I'm in the market for a new set soon and I want to get fitted but want to make sure its done correctly. Thanks in advance.

If you're willing to drive an hour, or you can take metro north and a bus or cab, Sterling Farms in Stamford, CT has a great club fitting facility. It's at the driving range so you can see your shots, no hitting into a net. She just put in a very high tech system from Callaway. Fitting fees are waived if you buy the equipment there. Prices are very competitive. I got fitted here for all my clubs.

You would think there would be more places like that closer to the city but I haven't seen them - its mostly just big box retail type stores offering fittings in the city and I've heard bad stories about the type of service people have received there.

DJYoshi, do you recommended that place in CT? I'm from Morris Co. and I plan on getting fitted in the spring. Is there anyone in our area you like for fittings? Lessons also. Thanks.

Pete's Golf Pro Shop ( http://www.petesgolfproshop.com/ )
This place does fitting for woods, irons, wedges, and putters. Reputable fitting shop on the island. Check it out. There are also some good shops I've heard of in Westchester but would like my fitter to be somewhere that I can have easier access to.

If you want to stay in Manhattan, go to New York Golf Center. Below is a link of a recent fitting they did for NYY pitcher Joba Chamberlain. Really high tech stuff. Call them for pricing.

I wouldn't want to be fitted hitting into a net, I need to see the ball flight, not just rely on the computer.

zuno you're in Morris county? there's a GREAT fitter in our area. i'm from Livingston...so not too far from you.

http://www.timmosel.com/ Tim runs a shop out in Denville. One of my friends got a set of Miura irons from him years ago and everything was fit and he raves about his experience there. There's also a custom spot out in flanders...btw most country clubs have them too...so why not roll to one and try to barter a deal for a round with the pro on the course?? hmmmm hahaha.

yeah Herb's right. the NY Golf Center has the 3d technology too. they've got all types of swing analysis equipment that the pros use..and only like 10 shops in the country have this..

Herb...where was that spot around you that can repair my clubs at the end of the season? I need them to be rechromed, loft, lie, all that adjusted.... I need to get a quote...if it comes to $300 or more, I might as well just sell them and get the new mp-68's haha

I've heard he is really good, but I'd rather find someplace outside to get fitted. The place in Flanders is called Golf Zone I believe. Someone from Mizuno recommended them. They are supposed to get their new fitting system in Jan or Feb. The fitter has to be good too, you know what I mean. I thought about the country clubs, but I wasn't sure if they did fittings for the public. I'll check them out also. If I go that route and barter for a round of golf, I'll let you know, you come meet me and we'll play! Thanks for the advice

Went for a fitting today at sterling farms http://www.sterlingfarmsgolfshop.com/page/554-22402.htm based on the recommendation Remy M.

It was a GREAT experience. First off - the guy who did my fitting Rob was very personable and easy to work with. He had me hit some irons and my woods. When he saw my swing he even spent about 30 minutes giving me some tips on how I can up my swing speed and get better contact on the ball.

I have a burner three wood with a broken shaft and after we determined I needed stiff shafts he said he can get it reshafted by taylor made for free and all i would have pay is maybe shipping and handling if that.

Then the best part of it all was that he suggested that I could simply get my existing equipment reshafted since I only purchased everything last summer. On top of that he suggested that I just get the three wood fixed for now - work on the tips that he gave me, get more consistent with the swing, and come back in a few weeks so that the fitting can be based on more consistent data. I would hit a few shots well but have some mishits and he didn't want to base the fitting on inconsistent data.

He didnt even charge me for anything - I was there like a hour with him watching my swing and basically giving me a lesson. I highly recommend this place to anyone who needs a fitting. It was the exact type of honest assessment I was looking for. I loved the fact that he didn't steer me to new clubs that I was willing to spring for when reshafting what I got would do the trick - even better I thought it was great he suggested to me it would be a good idea to hold off for now work on some stuff then come back so that fitting yields more accurate results.

There is no way a place like golfsmith, world of golf or some of these other places would have given me that type of time and attention - thanks for the recommendation - I am def. going to go to these guys for all my golfing stuff now.

Glad you made the trip, and had a great experience. Angela Aulenti runs a great shop and has great Pros working for her. I know Rob Larosa well and concur with all you said. That's the difference working with a true Pro as opposed to a salesman, they want to build a relationship and not just make a quick sale. I took a series of lessons there from Barbara Bolton before I got fitted for my clubs and the combination of both dropped my index from 16 to 12. After that I continued to work with Barbara and got the index down into the 9's. With the new teaching bay they just put in I think I'm going to work with her some more this fall before she heads to FL for the winter and then work on those things at the heated range there this off season to hopefully get the index down into the 7's.

I went to Pete's last year to get some wedges ground. They do a great job for really custom stuff like this that golf galaxy and golfsmith won't do. But I went yesterday to Pete's to get my loft/lies checked/bent and get some wrap under my grips or depending on cost get new grips. They wanted to charge me $60 for the loft/lie and I showed him my grips which are under a year old, just got them last spring, played maybe 30 rounds on them. Asian kid that worked behind the counter said there would be no way to remove the grip and save it. I would have to buy new ones at $14 a grip, said grip prices just went up, OK. They are crazy, it was going to cost me $200+ to get new grips and loft lie adjust.

Went to golf Galaxy in Westbury, NY about 2 miles away. $31 for loft lie adjust, $11 per grip, and said if I wanted to keep my old grips there would no problem in removing my old ones. If you need basic club repair adjustment done, go to golf Galaxy much cheaper and their club fitter is actually very knowledgeable. I told him about how many wraps I wanted under my grips and the fitter explained that if I made my grips too big it would make it hard to turn the club over. I already knew but still at the least the guy knows what he is talking about.
