I stopped by my local store today and they indicated that they would be getting a fitting cart for the new Mizunos in a couple of weeks. I asked several questions about the new set, including what changes were new, besides the obvious conformance to the new groove rule. The salesman responded that the sole is wider on the new 58's. This is a little disappointing since I don't care for really wide soles on my irons.

I also asked him if he anticipated the old 57's would be discounted by Mizuno and he said no. What do you guys think - any chance of that happening? I would sure like to get the 57's if they would be a little cheaper.

Finally, he mentioned that one of the options on the new Mizunos would be the DSP shaft. I dont know anything about these. Apparently, its a new company. Any opinions?

If anything, the sole is much smaller from when I compared the 58's to my 52's. I ended up grabbing a set of 58/68's

The 57s are one of the best irons mizuno ever made and they still sell very well so I don't think they will be discounted for awhile.

As a 20 something 'capper, I wouldn't have thought a marginally wider sole makes such a big deal? Besides, neither club is a 'really wide sole', not in game improvement territory, so I think you're making a fuss over nothing

When I was back in UK a few weeks ago, I trialled the 58s at the Mizuno National Fitting Centre and was able to compare apples to apples against my 57s. I tried 3 different shaft options with the 58 head, all of which were at least half a club longer than my 57s. As an aside, I also tried the MX300s and they were almost 2 clubs longer than my 57s. As others have said above, there's always some 57s on Ebay and sometimes you can get a used set in excellent condition, so you can save even more money that way.

From the

Mizuno website :
* The MP-57 irons conform to all USGA groove rulings, as well as the "Condition of Competition" Ruling taking effect on January 1, 2010.

I've hit an MP-58 6 iron off a matt into a net. The soles don't appear to be any wider, just a little flatter looking. They certainly are not 'really wide'.

I think the titanium piece looks a little gimmicky.

You can get MP-57's off eBay from reputable sellers at a good discount.

Yep, I got mine for 375. They had only been used once or twice. I couldn't even tell they had been hit. So there are deals to be had.

I was hoping to have my next set of irons fitted, but its probably not critical.

Its not a play thing, its more of aesthetic appeal.

Well, when the club is on the ground at address, there's no aesthetic difference on the soles of 57s and 58s - you can't even see the sole! If it's aesthetics you're worrying about, you should be more concerned with head size and top line? Anyway, you should probably wait and check the clubs out for yourself, rather than take the words of forum users...

As for getting a fitted set off ebay, it is still possible. Go and get fitted at your local store - get your spec nailed down in terms of shaft flex, length, lie, and there's your spec - now just keep an eye on Ebay. Even if you find a set of 57s on ebay that don't exactly match your requirements, it can be easily rectified through a club fitter - and it would still cost way less than buying a new set. If bought a used set from Ebay, I'd take them to a fitter regardless, just to get the specs confirmed.

I don't feel comfortable doing that. The golf store I go to is a locally owned place and they rely on local revenue to stay in business. Asking them to fit me for clubs and then turn around and order them somewhere else would be pretty underhanded.

Go to golfsmith or golftec and get fitted.... Thats what I did, I ended up being a half inch over for mizunos and 1.5* up...

I bought some MP57's a couple weeks ago on ebay that were half inch over, took em to the club fitter (awesome guy) and got the lofts put back to spec and bent the irons to my lie angle....

Now I have PERFECTLY sized clubs for me... All for 279 bucks!

Ebay is the way to go to save some serious green

Don't know about the DSP shaft, but there are usually a fair number of new or lightly used MP 57s on sale online for really low prices. I got a great backup set (3-PW, with rifle flighted 5.5s) on another board from a guy for $425, and have seen sets as low as $350 with the standard issue setup and shafts. There are a lot of buying options that are cheaper than popping for a new set from Golfsmith.
