How do you really know how far you are hitting the ball with your driver?

how are you all measuring this?

I know that my driver can get me 200 to 270 with or with out roll. I'm a high handicap so i am not very consistent, but on the course I can consulate my drives using roll with a gps from worst 190 to best 300 <-- (perfect swing with Down hill roll.)

When I see people say they can hit the ball 270 at the range or even 280 are these people actually measuring the shots or going by the signs or they just telling what they think the distance should have been?

Thanks for looking at my
Long, maybe dumb question.

When I tee off, if my drive is in the fairway Ill use my gps on my phone to mark the yardage. then when I get to my drive it tells me how far I am from the marked point. My average marked drive is 245, my best is 287.

For me, same as the OP. I would never use a driving range to establish any distance information. Most range balls are nothing like what we use on the course, and most range measurements are suspect anyway. Even if you use a laser to verify the distance markers, you still have the ball issue to contend with.

I only go by what I've learned from making shots on the course. For drives, that means using my GPS for measurement, and for approaches, I use my laser to shoot the target, then I know by how much I over or under shoot what distance I actually hit with that iron. Since I started using the laser for approach distances, I've become much better at club and shot selection. I don't leave nearly as many shots short as I once did.

i got tired of guessing at my range, so i took a yaradage counter to it and measured from the hitting spot to the back net and to other marks on the range.

Calculate carry distance on wet fairways where my ball plugs or one hop stops is easy to figure out. I usually use GPS instead of doing the old fashioned distance from tee minus distance to pin on approach shot.

I look where the ball left a plug mark and use the distance markers to get the distance.

I average 220-260 yards

Which essentially tells you nothing. The tees move forward and back on the tee boxes. The holes are typically measured down the center of the fairway... any fairway that isn't dead straight will give you a bogus calculation. Then too, most courses are not marked all that accurately in the first place. Lots of variables there that will make it a guess rather than a measurement.

Not much of a variable. yes I know if the hole is a dogleg of course I would have to take that into account. And the courses I've played have been marked well. Yes there are a lot of variables. But they're very small ones.

I am at a loss on how to measure a drive's distance without a GPS or laser range finder. In my new quest to shoot in the 70's my next purchase will be somekind of device that helps me make sure I know my distances without guessing.

No idea yet what that will be. But, over the winter I will research and then pull the trigger right before I can play next spring. There is an I-phone in my near future so it might be one of the programs that run on a mobile phone.

My best guess based on using the straighest holes at my home course is I average 225-240 with the occasional bomb of 250-270. My average swing is 75% of my full range of power so, every so often I have another gear to call on. That is if you consider my relatively short distance another gear.

If it is a fairly straight hole, and the yardage is lets say, 400 yds to the pin. If my second shot is 150 yards I know I hit my drive about 250. Until I get something electronic this is my best guess method.

Markers at my local private course vary by as much as 10% in places. If it is an old golf course, they may have used a roller measurement thing which cant take slope into account.

How do you know they have been marked well?

I was skeptical of yardage markers on courses as well, so I implemented my phones GPS function. There are indeed A LOT of poorly marked courses out there. Luckily, the 2 courses I play the most are VERY well marked with 4-5 markers on the tee and every sprinkler head marked to front, mid and back of green. There are also bushes on either side of the fairway at 250, 200, 150, 100 and 50 at the newest of the 2 courses. The GPS on my phone is always with in a yard of those markers... therefore, I base my distances with all clubs on those 2 courses.

Aside from that, the absolute best way to tell your driver distances is to get on a launch monitor. NOT the simulator at Dicks or Golf Galaxy, but a true launch monitor. These things can tell you exact launch angle, speed(club and ball, spin, carry distance, roll distance and your horrorscope for the week.

I know that yesterday at the range, I saw my balls hitting the back net about 1/2 to 3/4 way up a 100-150 ft. net, took my laser range finder and to the back net measured 271. And this was with range balls, granted I was probably swinging harder than I normally do considering i was at the range.

Because

A. It's a new club (1995) B. because they're reliable for me picking clubs 10% isn't much. we have marked stakes at 200, 150, 100 metres from the middle of the green. 10% is 5 yards. not much of a deal

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
