I've got a set of Cleveland CG Gold irons that are about three years old. When I originally bought them, I was just starting to take lessons again and my HCP was 30+. When I was fitted, they said I needed the lie bent upright.

I've since dropped to a 16 HCP and my swing has changed considerably. I do tend to pull the ball a little consistently. I was checking my lie angle at home and noticed i was consistently hitting toward the heel of the iron. So I believe I need now a more neutral lie angle.

I'm curious how much it generally costs per iron to change the lie? I've got 7 irons total. I'm looking at getting a new set this winter so the cost will be a factor. I'd like to keep the set though.

So any ideas.

Depends on the shop and area, but around here it is $5-$8 per club at the places I have looked into. If you want to keep the irons, it probably isn't that big of an expense. All taxes and fees included you are looking at maybe $50.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

That's kind of what I was expecting. Thanks.

Yeah, usually around the price the previous poster said. With those irons though, you may have to send them back to Cleveland which would cost you more money. I had a set a Cleveland TA7's about five years ago that no one would touch because they were afraid to break them. Cleveland confirmed that they would have to be sent back.

If I were you I'd go hit on a lie board and just see what you need to have done rather than guessing. You hitting toward the heel could be other things too and not just the lie angle. If you hit on a lie board and it confirms that your lies are correct then you know it's something in your swing and at least you've eliminated one potential problem.

If you're hitting the ball toward the heel - it is a ball placement and/or swing weight issue, not a lie angle issue.

If the heel of the club is hitting the ground first it's a lie angle issue.

It should be about $3 a club at a shop.

While I agree that extreme heel or toe contact is likely a swing fault, it's very possible for the lie to cause contact on the hell or to. If the lie is too flat, you're more likely to see contact on the toe and if it the lie is too upright, you're more likely to see contact more toward the heel.

You know I was wondering about that. The CG Golds have a notch on them that denotes what the lie is. I wasn't sure how adjustable is. I'll have my lie checked at one of the local shops. My test was at home using a video on You Tube. You take a piece of electrical tape and put it on the sole. After several swings on the carpet, you can easily see where the sole is contacting. Looked like a good check.

While not as good as a lie board obviously, I'd guess that would give you an indication of what you need. The only difference being that a club fitter using a lie board would likely be able to tell you how much they need to be bent where as I'm assuming from your carpet experiment, you're just going to guess? Especially if you have to send them to Cleveland, guessing and getting it wrong could mean you have to re-send them to Cleveland for another adjustment; which would suck.

It shouldn't cost too much more than normal to send them back to Cleveland though. I was mainly referring to shipping costs, etc. that you'll be charged to send them.

I agree. The carpet experiement was just a preliminary test to see if this is something I need to have checked by a fitter. If I do it, I'll take them back to where I bought them from to have it checked.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

is this any ping shop

It is the cost of sending them directly to PING ( http://www.ping.com/about/clubrepair.aspx ) for up to 8 clubs, plus $17 in return shipping and whatever it costs you to ship the clubs to them.

All told it ends up costing $35 plus shipping to them, so not a bad deal if you can ship them cheap and want to make sure you can get a free replacement if the clubs breaks. If the club is being bent within the specified angles in their chart and it breaks, they give you a new club to replace it assuming it meets their conditions for a normal circumstance (not too old, not an abused club, etc.).

In addition, some shops have a very hard time bending certain PING clubs without extra leverage. They can be a bit tougher than some of the forged offerings by companies like Mizuno.

    • Played Musgrove Mill today. 72.3/155. +9 for 15 official holes as 2 holes are closed, and the par 5 16th plays as a converted par 3. We played the first three holes over to finish 18, and parred 1 and2 amped bogeyed 3. The good: hit every fairway. 1 less than normal for the converted par 3, but the second time I have done that this year. My sand wedge approach on 10 after a monster drive hit the pin in the back left corner hit he pin and spun away to 9’, and I missed the putt.   The great: hit 8 GIR and 7 were inside 10’. Needs work: Missed every birdie putt. No lip-outs. Just struggled on fast greens. Three-putted the par-5 9th with the pin on the back tier and jut missed hitting my approach to the proper level and it spun all the way to the front of the green.
