Hello I am a Mac.
I like the idea of knowing how far my shots go, I like toys, I indulge myself within reason.
The only GPS I have seen on the course is the B/W Golf Buddy, it seems simple and mostly reliable. (Occasionally we have to tell it which hole we are on.)
Looking on the net gets one to overload fairly quickly; does anyone have a few suggestions for which ones I should narrow it down to as I decide what to get? If it requires a computer then it needs to be Mac compatible.
Thanks for any advice.

I love my Callaway Upro. It's fast, allows you to measure any shot, has a satellite flyover option, has good batterylife (36+holes), and all courses are free in the "Basic mode"

The Golf Buddy is Mac compatable. I don't know what other units are too but I would assume compatability won't be a problem. The only gripe I've got with my Golf Buddy is that on two of the courses I usually play the mapping isn't accurate on about a third of the holes. At first I thought it might be problems with the satilite signal but now I'm pretty sure it's the mapped coordinates. On the holes where the unit is obviously wrong it's pretty much useless. I've emailed Golf Buddy about the problem but I've never heard anything back from them.

I have an iTouch but it doesn't do GPS.
I have heard that the smart phone apps are slow... too slow. Do you find yourself waiting for them? I am tempted to buy an iPhone just to run the golf GPS apps, Golflogix app will keep stats, do others?

Yep, MyCaddie keeps stats. It can be slow, but if you keep your phone on, it's instantaneous. As long as your battery is charged before you leave, you'll have no worries.

It's quite accurate, gives a Google maps view of the hole, records stats, etc.

I've had no issues, and it's free. That said, I'm not sure if it's worth switching to the iPhone solely for this app.

Also, be it known that if you use Verizon, they disable the GPS feature in the phones unless you pay an additional monthly charge.

I've been in the technology field for almost 32 years now and I think I would go for a golf GPS unit. They are specifically designed for that use and you don't have to worry about getting texts and calls while checking yardage. Just my opinion.

I have used skycaddie, golflogix and two others. they were all good but I prefer my bushnell since I can aim anywhere I want to. Also keeping records and scoring isnt inportant to me because I like keeping my scorecards. I have 2 huge stacks on them that I keep and its fun to go back and look at them every now and then and see rounds that ive played with my dad and what not. I think golf gps units are great but like i said i prefer my bushnell.

I don't think airvue on my iPhone is that slow. Usually I pull my phone out of my pocket as I'm walking up to my ball and by the time i set my bag down the gps is locked in.

Airvue also keeps stats very well. GIR, up and down, sand shots, etc...

That used to be true, but Verizon finally opened up their GPS. I can't swear that it works for a golf GPS program because I've never tried, but the GPS on my Tour has no problem working with any third-party application that I have tried (Poynt, BBWeather, Superpages, etc).

Getting back on topic though, I have had zero complaints about my SkyCaddie. Yeah...there's an annual subscription. It costs about the same as a box of balls for me, so it's not that big of a deal. And I think I've run across exactly 2 courses (out of MANY that I've played) that they didn't have already mapped. As for their Customer Service? Don't know; never had a problem that I've needed them...so guess that's another positive.

I've used the SkyCaddie SG5 for over a year. It costs $29 for all the courses they have mapped in your state. Other plans for more states, countries. It's been very accurate on the courses I play. I love the interface and display. It stays charged for about 2 rounds, and only takes about 2 hours to charge when the battery is completely depleted. It's got USB so you can charge from a computer or car charger as well. It shows distances to up to 40 targets per hole (I've never seen near that many). You can find it on Ebay for around $299 or less.

I picked up an SG2 and will upgrade if I use it enough. So far it is great.

I have a Golf Logix (Garmin) unit and love it. A child could operate it. Tough waterproof housing. My wife and I float arctic Alaska rivers each fall and use the identical housing this gps has in our regular Garmin gps units. These things are tough and waterproof, I assure you. Mac or PC friendly. Incredibly easy to download courses and some 20,000+ courses are available. I could not think of one that was not found in the database. Just last week they email me and notify me that two of my chosen courses are updated as tee boxes and/or greens have changed. You can store 20 courses at a time. Just turn it on and go. Couldn't be simpler to use. Link below to product website, Amazon would likely have better prices. Also, read the reviews on Amazon.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
