Any Kentuckians out there?

I have accepted a promotion with my company and I am moving to your beautiful state and didn't know what to expect as to how this is going to affect my golf. I am moving from the South, so I believe I can say good-bye to year round play, but what about courses?

I am going to be centrally located and might be able to drive to Cinci for a weekend round

I live in Lexington and there's some great golf here. Here's my list: Old Silo (Mt. Sterling, KY) Houston Oaks (Paris, KY) Kearney Hill (Lexington) University Club - Wildcat and Big Blue courses (Lexington) Marriott Griffin Gate (Lexington) The Bull at Boone's Trace (Lexington) Gibson Bay (Richmond, KY) Cherry Blossom (Georgetown, KY). Those are the best public courses in the Lexington area. All courses that are listed outside of Lexington are accessible within 25 minutes. I'd definitely recommend Old Silo. One of the best courses I've played anywhere. As for playing all year, you can probably forget about it here unless you don't mind freezing temps? Right now it's upper 50's - low 60's which is still decent golf weather. In another month or so it won't get above 40 and in January and February it likely won't get above 35. No golf for me in those months. ;) I would definitely check out Man O' War golf too for your practice needs. Voted one of the best driving ranges in America by Golf Digest. Great facility.

Quail Chase in Louisville is a good course. Also, Nevel Meade in Prospect, which is in Oldham county but it's pretty much right outside L-ville.

I agree that Nevel Meade is great. Also:

Heritage Hill
Quail Chase, but only the East course(9)

The parks courses are not very good:
Charlie Vettiner is my favorite
Seneca is OK
Iroquios is OK

Several nice courses in the surrounding counties:
Fuzzy Zoeller's 2 courses are exceptional.
Old Capitol
My Old Ky Home
Maywood
Oldham County CC
Henry County CC
Deer Run
others I am forgetting.

The Casino courses are great, especially Fazio's Belterra.

Many very nice private courses if you know someone:
Valhalla
Persimmon Ridge
Big Spring (hosted the PGA Championship)
Harmony Landing
Hurstbourne CC
Hunting Creek CC
Louisville CC

And I agree with Deron, Lexington is a great golf town. I have played several of those courses.

Old Silo is a must-play. Just let me know when you go there, and I will join you.

I had always heard so many great things about Persimmon and how it was better than Valhalla and I just didn't care for it. I've played both and Persimmon in my opinion just doesn't compare to Valhalla. Maybe it was just the fact that it was so built up to me that by the time I got to play it I was expecting Augusta? lol. Don't get me wrong though, it was a very nice course, just not what I expected I guess you could say. Didn't feel it was worth $80 either. Maybe that's what left a sour taste in my mouth.

As for Old Silo, I'd be up for playing too if you need someone.

And for weekend or long weekend Stay and Play check out Perry Park Country Club and resort which they've done up real nice (27 holes). Very Clean housing/hotels on grounds, awesome food, nice NEW practice area and good people incharge. Park and don't leave 'til the trip's done. Also BYOB which is a plus and saves on cash.

I live in Northern KY and Lived in the Louisville area. In my option Cinicinnati rocks Louisville as far as quality/price. I haven't played much in Lexington but I will have to check out old Silo. My inlaws live about 30 minutes west of Lexington.

Up in this area:

Lassing Point is probably the best, I like the vineyard the most (great walking course, very tight and position oriented, also my home course). Elks Run is a nice spot but wasn't impressed with the condition last time I played it. I also like Kenton County's Fox Run and Willows. Around here you just don't get many flat lies.

Vineyard is SWEEEET and thanks to friends that work for Hamilton County I get to play for $7.50.

Nicest turf and greens for the money if you walk. A big mistake public courses make (nicer ones) is they cut the greens like it is club that gets little play then all you have is bumpy greens because they are so beat up.

The greens are a bit slower than some of the higher priced courses but they roll very well.

Great synopsis of the courses. If you have the money just stay away from the muny courses, except Vettiner. Chariot Run and Valhalla are BY FAR the nicest courses. Heritage Hills, Persimmon Ridge, and Hurstbourne CC are close thirds.

Not too far away then. You can get to Old Silo in 25 minutes from the east side of Lexington. Second best course I've played behind Valhalla. I hear that Olde Stone in Bowling green is nicer than both though... and more difficult.

I live in Lexington too, and I agree with these picks.

Old Silo (Mt. Sterling, KY) Houston Oaks (Paris, KY) Kearney Hill (Lexington) The Bull at Boone's Trace (Lexington) Those are my favorites. I really feel Cherry Blossom and Marriott Griffin Gate are overrated. To me Old Silo, The Bull and Kearney are solid all the way around. The other courses seem to have some good stretches of mediocre holes. Just my opinion though. Another in Northern Kentucky, jsut south of Cincy is Lassing Pointe. I went there a couple years ago and thougth it was a great course. Welcome to the Commonwealth, get used to UK ruling everybody's thoughts, and enjoy the Bourbon!

I definitely think Marriott Griffin Gate is overrated. It's still above a course like Lakeside, but for what Marriott charges, you'd think you were playing of the best in the state. I do like Cherry Blossom as it's always in good shape, but at the same time I feel like the layout isn't anything to get excited about either. I feel like they are a little overpriced also (as most courses here are). Houston Oaks actually has winter rates right now for $25 bucks with a cart... I'll be out there Sunday. One of the best courses around and about 10 bucks cheaper than anyone else's winter rates. I put the Bull with Cherry Blossom. Usually in nice shape, but the course really doesn't do much for me. Just isn't many exciting holes.

No kidding... you see my avatar. I don't fit in down here with all the true blue fans.

Good news for me, I am a UK grad. I have to deal with too many UGA and Gator fans down here. It's been 10 years since I have lived in KY, it'll will be good to be back. Although, I will miss the weather down here.
