Hi all,

I do tendency to straighten my front knee (left knee for me) during swing. It has been like that all of my golfing 20 years. Because of that, (I believe), I do have out-to-in club face if my knee gets straighten before impact. My swing is not Out-to-In swing, more like straight to straight. How do ya manage your front knee during your swing?

I am trying to refactor my swing all over again this winter to better my game. and this is the one I notice most.

I think it's meant to straighten a little.
Not too much though.

If you want to change your swing you might want to get a pro to look at it first.

the front knee bends (flexes) on the backswing, then straightens on the forward swing.

the front knee bends (flexes) on the backswing, then straightens on the forward swing.

It's really hard to see the impact position with normal speed of video. I want to know if it gets straighten at impact or not.

Well, I'm not really sure i understand what you mean or what you want, but looking at any knee, there willhave to be straightening and flexing during a swing ....

In the backswing your left knee will bend more to how it was at setup, and right before impact it will have straightened back to where it was at setup, continuing to straighten through to finish

Lead knee shouldn't actually straighten fully until past impact (range would be after impact to before clubshaft gets back parallel to ground...this is the area Sergio's straightens fully at). It is "straightening" as it goes into impact but not straight yet. Think of pushing down into the ground and flexing the knee throughout your backswing and starting FORWARD...then pounce upward off of that flexed knee.

Actually this was something I was thinking about last night. So I started to take some swings and really focused on the action of my left knee.

What did I find?

I found that it's challenging to keep the left knee flexed throughout the backswing without leaning forward. One of my old tendencies was a bit of a reverse pivot. I found that when I was able to keep the knee in as similar a position at the top of the backswing as when I set up, that two big things happened.

1) It was much easier to keep my swing on plane.
2) It was easier to keep my spine angle intact

However, it felt more constrained. But I will take that if leads to a better swing plane. I'm going to write about this on my blog because I think it's important. I have a good article on building club head speed and this kind of builds on that.

Actually this was something I was thinking about last night. So I started to take some swings and really focused on the action of my left knee.

This is why it is SO important to be straightening the back leg while flexing the front leg...they essentially offset each other, keeping the golfer more stable, and the back leg straightening allows the hips to turn fully on their tilted angle (club goes backward, inward, and upward during the backswing so the back hip MUST turn and rise a bit to accommodate the inward and upward.

    • I have fought shoulder issues and seem to now have a pull/baby fade going on.  Not a great video, but are these numbers ok or should i try to get in to out.  I've realized this winter my concept of in to out was wrong in that what felt in to out was actually just the face being open to get it right.  The first one was rushed the second one is more typical.  Minor pull or if the numbers line up baby fade back to target.
