so, after blowing out my nike sq 5000 shaft to the point where it flexes than a junior set, and since the shafts i want cost more than most new drivers with good shafts, i've decided just to go out and get another driver. so for the heck of it, i'm putting in a steel driver shaft into my nike to toy around with. if i still hit it well i may end up keeping it. what do you guys think?

It'll weigh more so you won't hit it as far.
But, the weight might cause you to strike it better.

I've got a steel shaft driver at home, time to try it out.

The steel shaft could weigh almost twice as much as a graphite. You might want to rethink that one.

Try it. The weight won't make much difference and you may well gain more in control/accuracy than the minuscule distance loss you'll experience. You'll find the finished club has a shorter length than with graphite as well to maintain the swingweight as it is - again good for accuracy. Still, the pros used to use steel shafted drivers at ~43" and Jack Nicklaus was still known to bomb the occasional drive ~300 yards.

As for shafts, try a Dynamic Gold if you want a lower flight or a Dynalite Gold if you want a higher launch. Excellent shafts at less than $20 a shot. Or try a Rifle (not the Project X) shaft which have great feel.

Not sure how a steel shaft will go with the large 460cc heads of today though. Still, what have you got to lose?

The question is are the shafts you WANT the shafts you NEED?

I'm sure there must be suitable graphite shafts at a suitable price, if you do your homework. Of course, if you're looking into golf shaft exotica, then you'll need to pay a premium.

I think you would have to put in a slightly shorter shaft if you go to steel like they do with fairway woods, maybe a inch shorter to keep the swingweight closer to what it was from the factory.
I'm not a big believer in changing shafts without going through a fitting, but it is ok to experiment a little I guess. I hope it works out whatever you decide to do.

yes, the shafts i want are the ones i need. playing at a 6.8 now and at golf school i spend alot of time researching, testing, and building equipment. i've done my hw, i WANT either diamana blue board or another aldila vs proto. both in xstiff and between 75-80gram weights.

Hi,

My first post, let's celebrate this...

I remember one of the best driver I had was a Cally Great BB shafted with a steel True Temper Tri Gold X shaft (I know, seems funny...).
This driver was a rocket launcher. Short 44.5" shaft, heavy weight for a more precise swing and just start swinging. The club will do the rest.
