Saw Sergio on the golf channel this past weekend and he was putting with what I believe was a hybrid? What the hell happened? Did El Nino snap his putter in a fit of rage?

I saw him putt a couple of times, but can't recall seeing him putt with anything but a putter.

I remember seeing him smash hit putter into the green after missing a relatively easy putt.Left a hole in the green, so maybe he damaged his putter there too, I didn't really see him again after that.Typical childish behaviour from him.

Ahh, that is what I was looking for. I know I saw him put with a wood or hybrid and it was so bizarre. Wish I had footage of that temper tantrum.

Please excuse my language, but Sergio is a ••••ing •••••. If I was at a tournament and I saw him screw up the green like that for the rest of the field, I would risk getting tossed out by dumping a full beer on his cry baby ass.

Indeed. That little tantrum is nothing we haven't seen from him before.Of course it's frustrating to putt that badly, but acting like a spoilt child and damaging greens is not gonna do you any favours or win you any fans.

I find it hard to see why Sergio is talked about so much, especially in relation to majors.Yes, he's got great distance and is a nice ball striker. But you could say that about half the tour these days.I think there's already better candidates for a first major win out on Tour, Sergio hasn't got the constitution for it.

I agree with your sentiments kpaulhus and spuds. He is just as big of a baby as JD. I just wanted to know the story behind what I saw. Ironically, he made the putt that I saw in with that hybrid or whatever and it was not that short, about 6 feet, I believe.

Maybe he should putt with it more often

Kinda off-thread, but I wanted to share one of Sergio's classier moments..

Ha, I remember that one! It is def horrible for the game, but sometimes I am just drawn to the players who lose their temper. Call it the Happy Gilmore effect or whatever. My cousin and I used to follow Steve Pate at the Buick Open because that guy would get pissed!

He was an upcoming star some years ago, but that never happened. Lately he's been an embarrassement to himself and golf.

What I did see this weekend was El Nino self destruct in 2 straight matches. I don't know if he is seeing a psychologist, but he either needs to get one quick or fire the one he has because something isn't working upstairs.

I remember watching Garcia playing in the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah -- (nearly) chasing down Tiger over the back nine, hitting a shot from the base of a tree, staring back at Woods waiting on the tee ... it was great. But I can't stand the guy now; and, frankly, I haven't liked him for years.

He's incredibly overrated. You can only say, "This guy's a great player and will win majors one day" for so long before you really should be saying, "Yeah, he's talented, but he's not a great player because he's never actually won one." His sometimes bizarre on- and off-course behaviour would be easier to tolerate if he'd actually done sometihng in the game.

Did anyone see the tantrum he threw when Poulter considered using a rule to his advantage in the WGC Matchplay event?

I did not... details please!

Poulter hit a wild shot and it went behind the tv tower and he wanted to take a drop from behind a bush that he had to go though to get to the tower

Poulter hit a wild shot and it went behind the tv tower and he wanted to take a drop from behind a bush that he had to go though to get to the tower.

Poulter's ball was at the base of a thick-ish bush and a television tower lay between that spot and the green. Under a local rule in place for the tournament, the tower was a temporary immovable obstruction. Poulter said that it was on his line of play because his "only" shot was to play right over the top of it. Ultimately, and after much discussion, Poulter decided not to take any relief (a drop under the rule) because he was worried that his lie might be worsened. He played the ball from the bush, hitting to the

side of the tower, rather than over it. Not a big deal, right? You'd think so. But Garcia thought differently: http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,...-23213,00.html .

    • I'm not sure who said it first but I've seen it a lot. There's this "think box" vs "play box" theory. I've also seen it with a planning vs doing line on the ground. The idea is basically you stand away from the ball (a couple feet) and do your "think box". This is where you do your planning, your swing cues, your practice swings (if you believe in practice swings.) All of that is done in the "Think Box". Then you step into your "play box" address the ball and hit it. Sometimes it's done with a imaginary line on the ground. You do all of the think box stuff behind the line. Then once you cross the line you step up and hit it.  Here's Annika Sorenstam demonstrating the "Think box" and "Play box": So, Annika's time over the ball is really short. Because she did all of that other stuff not over the ball, but in her "Think box".  There are lots of variations on this theme. But I think you get the idea.
    • I speak for myself. If I inventory my swing thoughts, swing tempo, optimum muscle tension and rehearse a swing before I take my address, then I pull the trigger reasonably quickly with usually acceptable results. Like a proper program download before deploying it. If I don't bother to by forgetting or just not caring, I am inclined to look for my cues while hovering over the ball after taking the address, while tension builds up and then I fire with a half ass program that is still buffering. I guess that's no better than rolling a dice. In other words, a good pre-shot routine does wonders. I am not advising folks to take 13 practice swings while the flowers wilt waiting for something to happen, but one or maybe two are reasonable and good for you. I am certain hitting half ass shitty shots and making double bogey takes longer than making a par.  My desire this year is to just that as I have not developed a habit taking a practice swing and as a result have tendency to freeze over the ball after address, that is counter productive for both time and result. I think that is what @saevel25 is talking about in the OP.

    • I think there's a difference between taking time over the ball and taking time to play a shot, at least IMO. One thing I've noticed in a few guys I play with who take a long time over the ball to pull the trigger, is that their backswing is really fast and I think it makes it harder to have a smooth rhythmic down swing. It's almost like they take so long to swing that when they do they speed to catch up. Doesn't lead to good golf IMO.
