The weather has been lousy the last few weeks here in VA, so I've been passing the time working on putting, and cruising local shops and Ebay for some poor man's driver combos. Unfortunately, it's gotten a bit out of hand. Looking to review what I have in place, and match up best combos. For a guy that didn't hit driver until late last year, I've gone a little overboard.

Quick review, I started playing this year, now at a 17hcp hitting 4-5fwys per round. I've done a quick fitting on the golf galaxy Zelocity LM, swing is very short, quick transition, 117.5mph average. Launch was typically 11*, spin around 3100rpm with several shafts (Prolaunch Red, V2) and a bit lower with a Motore. At the time of the fitting, monitor showed roughly 254yd carry and 276yd total. Not too impressed by the numbers, figured I'd try some current equipment outdoors and work from there. My on course ball flight is very high, so I was confused by the relatively low launch figures (could be excess spin)?.

In the small window of decent weather we had, I tried my XL Hibore 9.5* Stiff Fit on Red. Initially it seemed to launch too high, but on course I've found this to be a pretty good combo. If my swing is there, it's a nice mid trajectory flight, seems to rollout well enough. I was able to hit a couple 290yd drives (good swing struck pure) on level ground with relatively soft fairways on 55* days with this. Only issue is that at times, I feel like I put a good swing on the ball, and I'll get a hard draw left. Also, this shaft feels very stable, but can't say that I feel like it releases much energy to the ball, if that makes sense. I guess this is what's referred to as the term "boardy".

I also have an '08 Tour Burner with stock Stiff Reax. I like the feel of this club and feel that it's longer than the HiBore. Issue is I feel like the stock shaft is too loose, I can feel it lag at transition. Also the occasional ballooned shot, or miss right at the range. I also don't like the longer shaft length.

I put together a '07 Burner 9.5* I found cheap at a local shop, with an 85g NV in stiff. My intent was to get a nice midflight combo. I haven't been able to hit this a great deal due to the weather, but I realize now that it has quite a bit closed face. I was hitting some ugly pull-hooks with it when I did take it out.

OK, this is where it gets bad. I just picked up a couple drivers that I'm trying to sort through. I have a 9015D with stock Matrix in stiff, a Speedline 9.5* playing at 44.5" with a TM branded 65g stiff Whiteboard, and just picked up a 905R with stiff NV. Couldn't help myself, each of these clubs was found for around $55, figured I could use some as-is, and some to help test out shafts as I get into club building a bit.

I have a Proforce V2 Stiff 65g .335, Pershing 65 xstiff in .350, Purple Ice 75g stiff .335, Harrison Saga 75g stiff .335, and a 44" Fwy Prolaunch Red in 75g stiff. Again, some impulse buys here without a lot of analysis (I got the Pershing for $5 on ebay). So, now trying to sort out the mess.

My plan is to keep the Cleveland as-is. It does a decent job and will serve as the benchmark.

I believe I'll keep the 905R as-is even though I haven't hit it, mostly because I don't want to do a bore through (I have done one previously) and I'd think the NV is perfect in that head.

I'll keep the Speedline as is for now, basically just to see what the Whiteboard is all about. Heard great things but I haven't really hit a "high end" shaft before, so I want to see what it will do.

Pershing in the '08 Burner. Figure this should be mid flight, low spin, plus it's the only driver that will take the .350". Play it at 45"

Saga in the 9015D, heard this is a great combo and my understanding is this will be mid flight, very low spin, very solid. Play it at 45"

Prolaunch Red will go in my '09 Launcher 3wd. I hate the fit on Gold in this club now as it balloons easily, so I believe the prolaunch will be a nice test to see if the shaft can change the ball flight (realize I'll have to shim it to fit the hosel).

Odd man out is the Proforce V2. I play V2 HL in my other fwys and really like the feel I get from them, but they're too high launch for a driver. My understanding is this shaft plays great in the 905R, so may keep it for that club if the NV doesn't work out.

So, that all said, anyone see any issues with the combos here?

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
