Wilson FG Tour vs. Maxfli Tour LC

These two new golf balls have gotten my interest, but I have not had the chance to play with either. The Maxfli is just becoming available and the FG Tour has been out for a couple of months.

I really like the characteristics of the ProV1, but I've never been real comfortable putting with it; a touch too firm for me. (Putting with something like the Srixon AD333 is ideal).

Has anyone played with either of these? My hope is that they'll have the spin characteristics of the ProV1, but with a softer feel. Sounds like their respective street prices will be in the range of $35-40.

I have played the Maxfli Tour LC.....sure they are pricey, but I got them on sale at 39.99/doz, had a $3 off coupon, had a $10 off any $50 purchase, had a $20 off Dick's Rewards check, and when you bought one dozen, they gave you 1/2 dozen free. I bought two dozen, so I got 3 dozen for $34.

Comes out to under $1 per ball.......

As for playing them, I usually use Callaway Tour iX & Pro V1x.....the Maxfli was just as long, would drop & stop on the greens and had a nice soft feel on the putter. Same as the Titleist & Callway. I did find that the urethane cover will fray & scrape just like the Titleist & Callaway.

End result, as long as i can get them with "deals" to lower the cost, I'll use them.

I'm playing the WS FG tour right now. It is a very good ball, similar in feel to a pro v1. It seems to be a little more durable than the pro v and stops just as well on the green. Ill certainly use them again. If you are looking for a premium ball with a softer feel try out the Z-Star. Personally, I find the AD 333 too mushy for chipping/putting, I prefer a firmer feel and louder click off the putter like you get from a Tour iX or B330.

btw, golf ball companies are started to switch up their balls a little/softer because of the new grooves rule.

The Wilson FG is made in Tennessee. Its a good ball, relatively low compression.
The Maxfli Tour comes of the same assembly line in Tiawan as the TM Penta. The Maxfli is also a great ball, but a bit firmer than the WStaff .

well I just used the wilson staff fg tour. Overall its a pretty nice ball. It has great spin and the cover doesnt brown up like the proV. Cover seemed pretty durable as well.

I'm currently testing the FG Tour Ball. I believe it's a 3-piece urethane ball. I played a local pitch/putt and put them to the test in and around the greens. My first impression is that it is a very good ball. Chips and short shots which I didn't always hit cleanly checked up nicely. An aesthetically very simple yet pleasing ball. Off the putter, it felt great. . . soft yet solid.

I would pay the 40 bucks for a box.

yea they have tons of spin around the greens. On the box it says they came up with these balls since the new groove rule came into effect. So far I like them the best of the balls ive tried.

The FG Tour is excellent around the greens. Its cover seems to be softer and more "rubbery" than the ProV1.
Nice soft feel on putts - if your putter does not have a soft insert, it will feel like it does. It's not the longest ball off the tee but distance is good. Picks up a lot of sidespin which can be good or bad, depending on whether you shape your shots or not.
Most stores around here sell them for $35 which is 10 bucks cheaper than the ProV1.

I didn't know they were charging $46 for the Penta and it's made in Taiwan. That bugs me. If I'm spending more than $30 I like to see Made in USA/Japan. I'm not saying that balls from Taiwan or China are lower quality, but they are significantly higher profit, and I like to buy U.S. balls when I can. Especially when the value balls I occasionally play (Titleist DT and TopFlite D2) are both made in the U.S.

An aquantance of mine works for a small company that does Ball & Iron Testing using Iron Byron Machines. He confirmed this fact to me several weeks ago. THe Maxfli Balls and the TM Penta come from the excact same assembly line in Tiawan. BUt yes, the ball internals are different.
ALso testing proved that the Penta and the TM Reds and Blacks were some of the most erratic Tour balls tested from a Driver due to their huge seam. In flight deviation tests they ranked like 61st out of 62 balls tested.
THe world of Golf Ball Manufacturing is very secretitive for several reasons, one being that independant testers hired by Manufacturers are required to sign Confidencuality Agreements and not publish the results.

I'm pretty sure these are the exact same ball with different branding, and I'm also pretty sure the house brand of Sports Authority, Tommy Armour Tour is also the same ball. They play identical, and Tommy Armour Tour was on sale for 25 a dozen in store. That's a steal.
