I am a 13 handicapper hoping to make it to single digits this Summer (I live in Maine.....short golf season. Last played 2 days before Thanksgiving...in 41 degree weather......). Anyway, I would like new irons. I am not quite at the point where i would feel confident with blades but I want something that still gives me a lot of feel while allowing me some forgiveness. I have had very good luck with TM equipment but have had good luck with Callaway too. It seems that the R7's and X-20's can be had for not too much money at all now. I know the R7's are good for people around my handicap but was wondering about the Callaways....or maybe something else at about the same price range.

Yes I know I need to try them both out and see which feels better and that I need to get fitted. I of course plan on doing that....i was just wondering what opinions some of you may have on either of these irons...or other ones you may know of. If it helps...I'm 5'8" and 150lbs. My swing speed is about 105. My current irons are TM LCG irons. Yes....they are old...but I love these irons....it's just time to move on!

Any help you can offer would be great!!

I have hit both extensively on the launch monitors. I just switched from Cleveland TA7's to the Callaway X-18s. I think if you're confident in your iron game, you could really benefit from the r7s. They are a fantastic stick with a buttery sweet feel, despite the mediocre stock T-Step shaft (not that the uniflex from Callaway is anything to rave about either). However, if irons are the weakest part of your game, like me, you might could benefit from a little extra forgiveness that the X-20s offer. I went the forgiveness route, but these are 2 of my favorite sets out there right now, although I like the X-20s only marginally better than the 18s. So for me I'll stick with the extra $75-$100 and my X-18s instead of the 20s, but they're both great.

If I had $400 to spend and a little bit of time, I'd really want to take both sets out to the range and try them out, not just on the launch monitor. I really liked the r7s way more than the 18s I have now when I tried them next to one another on the launch monitor, but I've been scoring really, really well with my x-18s and I'm glad I went with them for now since they were about $100 less than either of the ones you're looking at.

I also was actually looking at the x-20, the x-18 and the r7s. my buddy has the r7 so i had a chance to use at the range rather than just the launch monitor like i did with the callaways. buy I found that the callaways had a little extra forgiveness then the TMs If you are really into shaping shots its easier with the TMs but i went with the Callways x-18s cause they have a little larger sweet spot.

The R7's look better, feel great and are fine for our handicap. The T Step shaft is o.k., but does hit the ball high. I don't like the looks of the X20, and hate uniflex shafts. Callaway has great customer service, however, if you have any club issues.

You may want to also look at the X20 Tours. They look much nicer than the X20's, are not much harder to hit and have better available shaft options. A friend of mine with a similar HC has these and really likes them. Check out Callaway Preowned.

Check our X20 Tour and X22 Tour models. If you get the ball up well, consider the X22 Tours - they have a higher Vertical Center of Gravity (VCOG), which means it would be easier to keep the ball

low when you wanted. I would upgrade to X22 Tours if my swing stabilizes a little more. X20 OK, but a bit klunky out of the rough.
