In order for me to make a good swing, I start my backswing with my hips and it launches my arms back without tension, then on the downswing I start with my hips and it whips my arms through the zone tension free for solid contact. Anyone else do the same? Just wondering if it's strange with that order or just another normal method that works overall.

That's what I've been doing ever since reading Utley's short game book.



Of course, I'm a high-capper, so I can't really say as to whether it's a good idea or no. Heh. It was having me get a bit lazy with cocking my wrists for a while, though, and I've been tending to fan the club open at the top.

It probably doenst hurt your swing any as long as you dont allow your hips to pull the club too much inside. I start my backswing with my shoulders, but there are millions of ways to achive the same thing in a golf swing. If the method works for you, then i dont see a problem.

I do... But just ever so slightly. And I am a hip slider forward as well, not a turner.

So, I was watching "Playing Lessons" with John Daly and he was talking about a drill he does where he swings one handed (left hand for right handed player). It teaches you to bring the club back properly so you do an inside to outside swing. Has anyone ever tried starting their backswing with a slight push of the left arm to throw the arms back on plane then rotate the hips and then just go tension free as best as you can on the downswing so you hit flush? Hopefully that makes sense.

I'm going to refer to a golf channel show too, the Haney Project. In his show, when he was teaching Ray to stop taking the club to the inside, he told him to start with a little wrist action, and then keep pulling with your shoulders. I think it's personal preference though. I normally start with shoulders, but I used to use my hips.

I’ve wondered the same thing. I have had some success starting backswing basically with initiating hip action that just causes the club to go to the top with the arms from the momentum/recoil. I haven’t seen an issue with the club going too  inside doing this. The club actually stays on a good plane since it’s just naturally swinging up without assistance. The odd part is the hip turn is first and stops first and the arms are late to the top. I’ve watched it on video to know it’s the case (it isn’t just a feel). This has been fine for me because I can just take a moment and let them get there in transition.
 

However I always read “everything should arrive at the top at the same time”. I’m not sure why that really would matter though. I can’t find anything good on this subject. 
To me initiating the backswing with the arms or shoulders or “everything” just means the arms have to be a bit more engaged right away (instead of free flowing and swinging).

Just want to let you know you replied to a thread from 2010. We all have our own triggers to start our backswings. As long as it doesn’t throw you off, most ways to start can work.

I think the hips and ought toers (and even your knee) should all begin the swing along. You should not specialise in simply moving your shoulders, as a result of then you may get approach to movement and around your body. You will be stuck within the scared burying ground with no simple approach of obtaining out. If you're thinking that concerning all moving as a unit, it's abundant easier to urge the sensation of a takeaway and backswing.

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily. 
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity. 
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
