So essentially, as I understand it, 2 irons, 2 hybrids and your 5 wood have about the same degree on them. So pretty much they'll hit about the same distance, hypothetically.

My question is, what is the advantages to carrying a 5 wood instead of a 2 iron or 2hybrid. Or carrying 5wood and 2hybrid, or a 5 wood and a 2 iron. or whatever combination you can think of.

What do people think?

I'm terrible, but i have fun.

No. Two-irons typically have smaller sweet spots and steel shafts (more weight). 5-woods are typically the longest, and both 5-woods and hybrids typically have graphite shafts.

They go close to the same yardages (within about 20 yards, usually), but overall, the 5-wood is typically the longest and the two-iron typically the shortest. And that's only if you have the swing speed to get good distance with a two-iron.

Typically, you don't carry them. I carry, for eample, a 3-wood, 2-hybrid, and then a 3-iron.

The 5-wood goes the highest, the 2-iron the lowest, typically. Tiger plays both a 2-iron and a 5-wood, but never at the same time. When he wants more carry, he goes with the 5-wood. Look at page 139 of the September 2006 issue of Golf Magazine. I don't think the issue is online yet (golfonline.com) or I'd link to it.

i dont really know any golf tech stuff, so i usually reply to posts from personal experience.. as i'll be doing here.

i currently carry a 5 wood and a 3 iron.. never a 2 iron. ive tried a few different 2hybrids and i simply couldnt control them as much as i can my 5 wood. if need be, i can keep my 5 wood low or shape it a little in either direction (although it doesnt always work out). when i demoed the 2hybrids, they all balooned way up in the air and in hawaii the wind is generally stiff enough to ruin any shot thats too high in the air.

Hmm ok very interesting. I guess I just have to go out and hit a 2hybrid and see how it works for me.

My last round of golf I played, my 5 wood treated me very well. So maybe I'll just stick with that for a while, and look around to upgrade to a 2hybrid if one feels right.

While i hit my 3 iron well, i guess I probably shouldn't really look to dabble with a 2iron unless i become some sort of pro haha, which i don't really forsee inthe next few years.

I think it mostly has to do how you want to use the club, taking into consideration your level of accomplishment. I am just not strong enough or skilled enough to hit a 2 iron consistently. I have tried hybrid 2s and they are great off the tee and depending on the model I find them easier to work. Depending on your swing usually one or the other is better for you out of the rough. That is why I carry my old 7wd. It has rails, and is not as shallow as newer clubs, since it also doesn't have any offset I find it really a good choice when I am in the rough and have to lay up on a par 5 or need the extra power of a longer shaft so I get maximum carry. A better golfer would be using a 2/5/2h off the tee more often and would be able to take advantage of increased workablility. For some the increased accuracy from a shorter shaft trumps the power of a longer shaft. After all that you still have to find one that you like. In time you develop preferences. Besides there are even divisions among hybrids. Some are more wood like and others more like irons.

yeah i think i'm going to start looking around for deals. I don't know if i want to invest a lot in a 2hybrid, but if i find a good one on clearance or something i'd definately check it out.
