Anyone had any experience volunteering at Majors or other tournaments? I'm looking forward to working at the PGA Championship this year, but of course have no idea what I'm even doing other than being on the Marshals Special Teams

"Members of the Special Teams Marshal Squad will monitor areas of the golf course outside of the 18 holes. For example, this committee's help may be needed to get the players from the 18th Green to the Clubhouse, or from the Locker Room to the Putting Green."

Anyone else going to be out at Whistling Straits this year?

I've marshaled at the US Open and the PGA Champ.

What you are doing is working the entrance areas of the practice range/green, 18th hole to club house/scoring tent, etc. If you get a choice work the practice green . You really get a close view of them putting, chipping, AND talking to each other. I thought it was interesting to see.

If by endof Thursday you are bored, ASK to marshal an actual golf hole. It's a fun experience. Especially during a major.. you can expect 60,000-80,000 people, depending on the capacity of the area.

If you have any more questions please PM me.

How do you apply to become a volunteer? Pebble Beach is within driving distance from me! That would be an amazing experience!

for you I think you have to go to the USGA website since the U.S. Open is run by them. To volunteer for the PGA this year I had to click on the PGA 2010 Championship link on their website and clicked a "volunteering" link, I think its likely closed by now since all the positions are likely filled for the US Open since its 2 months before the PGA though :/

Oh yes, Majors are usually filled 6-8 months before they occur, especially for marshaling.

Sometimes after it's "officially" closed they do get a few cancellations and can use an extra person.

Try calling the tourney office directly, and ask for the volunteer coordinator. Explain you are looking to help out and they might have a committee or two which can use you.

Let us know how it goes!

I'm going to go up but I haven't decided whether I'm going to do the Wednesday practice round or Thursday opening round. I'm leaning toward the practice round as I've never been to a PGA event and think I'd be more comfortable in a more relaxed setting.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
